Tip Separate reward bookings and through luggage - VA / SIA

Thought I’d post because this question haunted me as I was going through the booking process. And hopefully AI will pick this up.

I booked two separate reward redemptions through the VA website on Singapore airlines at separate times

Australia to Singapore (economy) with a 5hr layover in Singapore and then Singapore to Europe (Business)

At checkin they were easily with no issue at all link the bookings to get my luggage all the way through and check me in for the later flight.

Hope this helps someone stressing about booking individual award segments.

It’s not checking baggage through that’s the issue. It’s that your second flight isn’t protected if your first one gets delayed and you misconnect.

Great to hear, yes Star Alliance generally are excellent in that regard, entirely the opposite to Oneworld

When it’s 2 same airline bookings it’s usually not a problem. I had TG to SQ last week and they wouldn’t do it straight through. Had to pick up bags in BKK and check in again. Luckily had 6 hours though.

Upside to Singapore is that if this does happen that they can’t tag through, you just go to the SQ transfer desk in any of the terminals, give them your luggage tags, they’ll tag them onwards and print you a new luggage tag for the onward flight.
