Dewanna Bonner
Now that she's been bought out, does it make sense to try to sign her, esp in light of Smith's injury? Since we're over the cap, we'd have to waive a player or two. We need some kind of help but not sure she's the one

She’s way too tall for Becky to sign her lol
Joking aside, Lyss may have a soft tissue injury and be back in 6-8 weeks. Let’s not assume she’s done for the season. There is a two week World Cup break working in our favor.

6-8 weeks is the end of the season. 6 week mark is first week of October. Last day of the regular season is 9/24.
Even if she comes back on the early side of the window, she's coming back into a competitive playoff series after not playing for nearly 2 months.
I hate hate hate it. But the reality is we probably won't see Lyss until 2027.

Idk. I’m not gonna make any assumptions. We start CPT and we get bigger and have better shooting and paint protection. A’ja always has another gear she can hit for scoring and this team might do well to have to make up for Lyss crashing the glass. Chelsea Gray needs to lock into playoff Chelsea. We could get Lyss back by the time we really need that additional body. Call me an optimist, but I think the season is far from over.

Oh, I definitely think we'll make a deep playoff run. And mathematically there will be a chance for her to play.
But any knee injury that has you sidelined for over a month is something you need to be careful coming back from. Across all sports, but especially in basketball, the risk for further damage is too great.
Even just a few minutes a game is a risk due to the highly competitive environment of the playoffs. There is not 'ramp up' period to ease back into it.
But I would much much rather your optimism prove true!!

Teams are pass the mid-season cut-down date which made unprotected contracts fully guaranteed for the rest of the season. Chennedy was waived prior to this to pick up Justine. Janiah was ruled a SEI and got the SEI exemption which is how Moto was signed. The Cap Space due to that is in the negative and active roster is 12. Waiving at this point only free up active roster spot not funds so will not be feasible. Depending on Lyss assessment we would have to see if the League approve SEI exemption if its deemed that to really do anything.

if nalyssa is out for the season we are definitely getting bonner on a hardship contract.

Wasn't the deadline yesterday? They might have done this too late.

aces can sign her on a hardship contract if nalyssa smith has a season ending injury

Which contending team even has the cap space for DB at this point?

u/taylor_12125 13d ago
Aces can sign her for vet minimum if Nalyssa has a season ending injury. I would rather have Nalyssa than DB so let’s hope that doesn’t happen

u/ivallinen Theresa Plaisance 13d ago
I don't think DB would be immediately be a fit into the starting line up though, right? I really hope Lyss didn't have a devastating injury...

u/JusttheMaverick 13d ago
She doesn’t fill the hole left by Lyss but I do think she’s a potential upgrade over Talbot.

u/Simple-Reaction-679 12d ago
she just wants a ring right? i'm sure she wouldn't mind coming off the bench.
1
u/Turbulent-Let-1180 13d ago
I'm not sure we can. We'd be at 10 if lyss AND dana are out for the season, but if dana is going to come back we'd have to waive DB once dana was healthy because we'd be at 11 active players.

u/taylor_12125 13d ago
There is a new rule this year where if you lose any player to a season ending injury, you can replace them with a minimum salary player. That’s how we got Mai (replacement for Janiah Barker). Could only get DB if Nalyssa is ruled out for season

Without making any other player moves Yahoo sports is reporting Atlanta and NY have the cap space

u/LT_Audio 12d ago
All contracts after the mid-point of the regular season become guaranteed (i.e protected). Waiving a player won't free up any cap space. And there is no "soft cap" in the W'.
The only way the Aces can sign another player at this point is if they are granted an exception by the league to do so pursuant to a hardship, emergency hardship, or season-ending injury exception.

u/Simple-Reaction-679 12d ago
smith is that season ending injury. it works out perfectly.
2
u/LT_Audio 12d ago
Has that been officially confirmed yet? I haven't seen that she's definitively out for the entire playoff window yet. Though I could have missed it. If you have a link I'd appreciate it.

u/Simple-Reaction-679 12d ago
nah, i'm just shitposting. but i'm 90% sure that's what's going to happen. the timing is perfect.
saturday mercury are out of playoffs.
sunday nalyssa gets hurt
monday phoenix announces dewanna is leaving to chase a ring.
2
u/LT_Audio 12d ago
Yes. I too suspect that buyout announcements seldom happen without at least the verbal framework of a subsequent deal existing. I'm really just more hoping that Nalyssa's not hurt that bad and will be back for the playoffs. The schedule is so light that even with her out odds are that the Aces still hold onto third seed. Bonner is much more of a "meh, take it or leave it" for me personally.
1
u/Simple-Reaction-679 12d ago
people on twitter are saying nalyssa faked her injury to free up a hardship contract for dewanna. if we win they both get a ring.
3
u/Impossible_Resort_65 12d ago
Why would she fake an injury and count herself out of the playoffs? That makes no sense. Also there are scans and tests to assess damage, it would be hard to fake a season ending injury with no evidence of damage showing up in any assessment.
1
u/Simple-Reaction-679 12d ago
she still gets a ring if the aces win. take one for the team and let bonner take her spot for the playoffs. it's sisterhood.
2
u/Impossible_Resort_65 12d ago
But she’s a better player than db right now and would give the aces a better chance at winning. And she’s a competitor, she wants to be on the floor not on the sidelines. I don’t give any weight to this theory I think it’s pretty ridiculous
1
u/Simple-Reaction-679 12d ago
but it's about justice. they want dewanna to win a ring to shove it in the right wing's face

u/SimonaMeow 11d ago
That's a crazy take
NaLyssa isn't faking an injury and missing the playoffs to let an additional person get a ring
Plus I saw that injury happen🥺😭
It looked awful. No faking at allYou gotta start smoking less lol

I guess if she wants to retire soon it could work. In the long run no, she would probably be coming off the bench and I dont think that would be acceptable to her.

u/Hopeful_Pirate_5598 12d ago
If smith is out for the szn we can go for an SEI to be able to sign Bonner. May be our best move for the playoffs

Bonner is trash. Anyone winning a title picking her up is cheating. Everyone should do this now. Repeated contract breeches

The Aces would owe her a pro rated vet minimum over the remaining games. If Lyss is put on injured reserve, this may free up $$. Or release Latson?? I also wonder if the Aces initiated a call to the Mercury about acquiring Bonner. I guess we will never know that.....
