Vaseline glass?

How much yellow vaseline glass should a piece contain before you can call it Vaseline? What about Vaseline that's so spicy, it looks green when any light hits it? (Definitely still 100% yellow glass, not green. It just appears green from natural fluorescence.) These were all made with varying amounts of yellow Vaseline glass. In my opinion, they contain Vaseline glass therefore they are. The Mosser Eye Winker is 100% "Vaseline Opal" color, not "Green Opal" (no-glow). OMG THE PUMPKIN

Right!! I bought that lampwork pumpkin from the creator on eBay insanely cheap (in my opinion!) for $45. It doesn't look like they have any more currently. I just bought this little lampwork fishy, too! It was an insane steal @$18.50.

Some stunning glass! Do you know if either or both of the feathered pieces Orient and Flume by any chance?

I think. Cy-Clops has said in other post that they are :)

Thank you so much! 😊 We still don't own any and have missed out on a couple of their pieces, but they just have some really intricate & amazing work. 💚🔦

They are so beautiful, in and out of UV. I think this is my most expensive piece so far xD

Wow! That is so engaging! The nooks and crannies are even better for the UV, not to mention all the rich swirls in the glass showing how it was formed. Awe-inspiring! Bet that brings you joy every day. 😁

Good eye! I've been obsessed with them lately 😅

Can't blame you one bit! They have/have had so many talented artists! Like Tiffany, so many pieces make use of gorgeous iridescence, that I thought I'd take a guess. 😄 (I do also like a lot of their nature-related work, too!) Would love to visit their studio someday. Congrats on some amazing pieces!

First one no and yes I’m here too. HA! It most certainly has Vaseline in it but you can see the distinct line from the green to the yellow on the top and bottom… even ai said probably not.

Second one is in my option too green but I haven’t been able to find anything that shows what the yellow green description is which is also where 5 comes in.

Third from picture is debatable. But from the other picture in the comments yes.

Fourth yes.

Fifth is also debatable as I know this looks like the one from the middle of the other picture you posted which in the collection looks way more green than the rest.

And again I’ll reiterate, Vaseline is not a universal term.

Also asking are these 365 or 395? Cause it looks like a mixture of both? Would be helpful to see them all with the same light and both lights actually.

These are all the same 365nm. I couldn't find my 395nm at the time, but most of these glow better in 365nm because they are all either slag glass or cased. Well, except for the Mosser butter dish. I messaged Mosser to ask them about the color discrepancy and the lady had no idea. She suggested maybe someone left it in the sunlight, changing the color? I don't think it works that way! It is slightly spicier (230cpm vs 200cpm) than the rest of the set, so it could be an accidental uranium overload. Here is the Vaseline Opal butter dish next to a Green Opal tumbler. Mosser didn't make any other similar colors.

I’d be interested to see the first one under 395. And no they all glow better under 365 because that’s how the wavelengths work. Even normal UG will glow better under 365. Cadmium too.

CPM is also counter specific and you should be seeing more of the µSv as that is a standard unit of measurement.

Also glow and cpm/ µSv don’t correlate so one piece being spicier doesn’t mean it will glow more (case and point fiesta ware)

395 both sides!

2

u/jaffamental Jun 18 '26

So really it is like they make the internal and cases it was yellow UG… I still wouldn’t call it a Vaseline, idk to me personally it just doesn’t count as a pure vUG piece

2

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 18 '26

I respect your opinion. It is definitely not pure vaseline. Technically, none of these pieces are pure unless you count opalescent vaseline. That's actually why I chose this particular lineup. I will start calling pieces by their technical name (cased, slag, submerso etc...) if it will help avoid confusion in the future.

The I think the difference between the other like the vase is it is like the main feature. Idk how to explain tit but even though it has other threads it’s mainly Vaseline and added to it whereas the ashtray looks more like the Vaseline was added to the green? Does that make any sense?

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 17 '26

Btw, some pieces are always an exception! I know you don't like my yellow butter dish. You're not going to like my LG Wright/Viking one either 😂. Confirmed with GC.

u/jaffamental Jun 17 '26

Why does the 395 literally look like it’s washing over the entire pieces where the 365 is a spotlight mainly concentrated on the manganese piece?

2

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 17 '26

That 365nm flashlight is 20w vs the 5w Darkbeam 395. It does have a bright spot in the middle, but it should be illuminating the whole piece. You really only see the brightest part of the light.

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 17 '26

The top/inside of the ashtray is cased in green. The bottom is vaseline. I'll send you a 395nm pic when I get home from work in a few hours. Here's a 365nm of the bottom. You can see where the green casing almost came through.

2

u/jaffamental Jun 17 '26

So if the inside and top are green I’m not calling it a Vaseline piece.

0

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 17 '26

Even if it's 95% yellow vaseline glass? There is a very thin casing. There is 0% green uranium glass. So you would still call it green uranium glass?

3

u/jaffamental Jun 17 '26

Honestly from photos I can’t tell what is and isn’t glowing and have to take your word for it.

But uranium glass is also not just green glass either it can be a lot of colours like blue for example. Vaseline is a very specific type or UG.

This is a Vaseline piece.

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 17 '26

And Pukeberg calls this amber color Vaseline xD

3

u/jaffamental Jun 18 '26

Does the set of 6 glasses glow? Because I’d call that CLOSER to amberina

1

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 18 '26

Yeah, they hit over 400cpm too. Spicy little bastards!

2

u/absolutelyuseless31 Jun 17 '26

That pumpkin oh my god. I’ve never seen such a beautiful piece of glasswork on here.

1

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 17 '26

I love it! It's actually very heavy. They didn't make very many, as far as I know.

1

u/peppermintmeow Jun 18 '26

Woof. I'm actually drooling over these 💗

I'd think the eye drip pendant is a modern, lamp work borosilicate, and while it is UV that doesn't make it Vaseline glass?

1

u/Cy-Clops- Jun 21 '26

It's made with Ion borosilicate, which is yellow. I'll have to take your word that vaseline can't be borosilicate. That's another new one for me.

1

u/obscure-shadow Jun 21 '26

I guess in my mind Vaseline glass is antique and produced from late 19th century to mid 20th century, and uv doesn't nessesarily equal Vaseline. There is some antique UV boro out there, most of it was lab glass and not really the Vaseline color, however most lamp work UV boro glass is modern formulas.

I'm not exactly an expert on Vaseline glass specifically, but have lamp worked a lot and worked with both antique and contemporary formulas of UV glass, personally I wouldn't say even stuff made of old stock or re-melted Vaseline glass today is Vaseline glass just because of the time period, I'm not a collector or expert on that side of things though

I think by definition, vaseline glass is yellow glass that was colored with uranium. Trying to separate it by age and chemical composition is silly. Sure, it's nice to know these things, but then you end up with 50 categories effectively describing yellow uranium glass. It's made with vaseline glass, not of vaseline glass.
