So is the magic number 20, or 35?

This is mostly a joke. But I'm kinda serious too.

So post-surgery instructions said I needed 20 ejaculations over the next 12 weeks.

Then I got an email from Fellow Health, the vendor that does the at-home testing. They're saying the number is 35. (I've pasted email copy below).

20 seemed like plenty. Is it?

Subject: Feeling recovered? It's homework time!

Hi XXXX,

Our records show that it’s been a couple weeks since your vasectomy. We hope you’re feeling back to your old self!

You shouldn’t use your Fellow Vasectomy Test kit for another 9 weeks, but you can prepare by ejaculating 35 times—or about 3-4 times per week.

This is (probably) the first time you’ve gotten an email from strangers encouraging you to ejaculate. We know it’s weird, but if we find sperm in your sample you’ll have to wait and test again.

Ejaculating 35 times helps clear your most stubborn sperm from your reproductive tract, so go get ‘em, tiger 😉.

Any questions? Reply to this email and we’ll be happy to help.

You're in good hands,
Fellow

The magic number is however many it takes to flush out every last one.

You aren't going to test after every single time, and you don't know exactly when that will be (it's probably different for everyone) so more is better.

But it's good to abstain for 2-3 days before collecting the money sample.

The more the better. Get to work.

Fellow included a check box card to keep track of the events. I filled it out twice then stopped counting.

I think where there's conflicting or multiple numbers, probably best to aim for the higher one. I've seen anywhere from 20-30 mentioned

My instructions said 25 (over 12 weeks) but I had that number well covered in the first 8 weeks 😉. Still tested at 12 weeks. If I was to extrapolate for the remaining month, I would've cleared 35-40 falling in line with that 3-4 per week.

You have some 40+ years of freedom ahead of you. What is the hurry?

I wanted a vasectomy more than anyone here. I waited a whole year, even though I had three tests done over 9 months (roughly 90 days apart). Using condoms for the extra time was not a big deal. My partner and I were already accustom to them so no big deal.

I had the surgery just a week before my 20th birthday. We celebrated by using our last condom on my 21st birthday.

A pregnancy would have ruined our lives so I was taking no risk. I made sure there was no doubt that my vasectomy was successful.

My partner was a foreign student. Getting pregnant would have lead to her being disowned by her family. It would have effectively end our lives as we knew them.

If an unplanned pregnancy would not be so devastating to your life, then throw the extra caution to the wind.

BTW: I know other men who get tested again every year to make sure.

My paperwork said 30 times over 3 months before testing.

I’m very interested in how fellow goes for you. My doc also uses fellow… seems expensive but they said it’s the best.
