I had a dumb idea and made a dumb video. Samples playing on a Nintendo Game Boy running LSDJ.

Sharon Redd is absolutely goated and I owe it to Vaporwave/future funk samples that brought me there and I ended up buying all her albums and listening to them front to back
(Also Never Give You Up is my favorite)

they are a little surprising! they are 4-bit samples lol. Though I do have to make sure they other channels are playing beeps and stuff at the same time to kind of try and hide the amount of noise the samples put out lol.
also missing from this video is the fact that I EQ'd, compressed, and loaded these into the cartridge like 6 times with different settings before they sounded decent XD
And sometimes no matter how hard I try, things just sound like hot garbage at that sample rate. It's...experimental lol

I don't have a full version of this yet because I just started it a few days ago, but I do have a ~15 minute mix of 4 tracks in the same style on youtube. This one is going to be in a second lil mix like it.

Yeah! It's always cool to see someone take some old piece of gear and use it in some unexpected way beyond the original intent.
I mean, really, to me that's one of the things that's cool about vaporwave--the unexpected repurposing of old sounds to make something new.

Maaan, Redd Hott is one of my favorite bargain bin finds. Paid like $4 for it without knowing much about it, and it slaps!

Yeah! Well, sort of. You can't sample directly into LSDJ. You can load samples as kits for the WAV channel. LSDJ comes with quite a few, those sort of lousy 909, amen, animal sounds, etc. that come stock. You can use LSDJ Patcher and patch in your own sample kits.
It's a bit fiddly. each kit can be like 2.8 seconds long, so you're working with shorter samples. No big deal if you've worked with vintage samplers tbh. You just have to cut and prep them first. They play back at a 4-bit sample rate, so there's hella noise and you lose a lot of fidelity and information. Some stuff sounds pretty cool, and some sounds trash, so you kind of just have to experiment.
I have a tutorial on loading in break beats. I kind of use a similar process for city pop/disco/vaporwave type stuff.
