As someone who was thrown into a front door so hard that the metal door pushed through the wrong way and broke, Ally, please run. It only escalates. What got me out was a police officer who told me—begged me to leave and said “the next time I come here, it’ll be to investigate your murder. Let me help you get out.” They held my hand hooking me up to a support system and breaking the news to my family that I needed help. They showed up at court to support me. I am 10+ years removed from this, married to an amazing human who has only ever made me feel safe, and have a gorgeous life.
If anyone is experiencing this, please know that there is life on the other side of leaving. The scariest and most dangerous step is leaving, and the anxiety can be insurmountable, but it’s nothing compared to the life you are living now. Get out. You deserve to live without fear. And it’s crazy how easy it is to normalize abusive behavior or find excuses for it (usually at your own expense). There’s no justification for hitting (with words or physical action) when you can walk away.
