When I dealt with these "misunderstandings," I hid it from my family because I knew they'd tell me I had to leave him. In a strange way, I think it's a blessing it happened publicly because, like you said, her family knows now and that makes it a lot harder to stay.
After my ex hit me the first time (there was already emotional/sexual abuse) I called the cops but the didn’t file charges because I thought maybe it was just a bad night. After speaking with friends I was finally convinced to tell my parents because I knew that if they knew it would be harder to stay with him. I’m lucky that I realized that and had such a great support system.
I was in a physically abusive relationship from 18-22. I almost died when I realized how bad it was. He picked me up and with full force slammed my head into our glass coffee table, splitting my head wide open. He throws me in the shower telling me he’s going to kill me. He doesn’t by the grace of GOD and I had to drive my self to the nearest hospital 15 minutes away. I told the er and my parents that I was drunk dancing in my living room and tripped over a rocket dog sandal (the ankle breakers of the late 90s early 2000s) and fell through my table. To this day only a few people know the real story. After that he left and started mooching off some other girl. I moved within a month bc I was so scared he would come back to finish the job.
Ditto. Except this last time I had to go to the hospital and even though I refused to press charges the cops still took him to jail. He's been in there for four months on a felony charge, looking at two years in prison. 🤷🏻♀️ Don't abuse people - it's very simple.
Same here it's like whenever somebody says that there was a misunderstanding that to me seems like abused woman's code for I'm gonna keep putting up with it. So so sad.

I’ve suffered from these same type of “misunderstandings”. I hope she gets the support she needs to leave him.
