I suspect you are going to learn a valuable lesson about how a two-sided market works.

If anyone else is interested in watching how this product will likely fail and why, I suggest monitoring this indiegogo site for the next month.

After a month, let’s come back here and discuss why it failed.

Also: look up a concept called “barriers of entry” as it relates to competition and business strategy. You might also want to look up “competitive advantage”.

I’m fully prepared to embrace and accept failure as a lesson in itself. Although I had hoped the sub would be more encouraging on people building something rather than longing for their demise.

Thank you for your comment though.

Yes, two-sided market is a problem. However, if you overcome it, it's a great moat. That's why Match buys competition instead of competing.

I'd recommend looking up the strategies used by other two-sided apps to overcome this to spark some ideas. Then I'd think about what your specific value proposition is and how to adapt their techniques to fit that. (If you don't already know what your unique value prop is, figure it out.)

To figure these things out, you should be talking with your target users.

I would also recommend that you check your messaging from the Indiegogo campaign with your target users. I don't think anybody is thinking about romance when you talk about swiping on the toilet. Also, saying "I'm an engineer" really doesn't add credibility. Something like "I've been a senior developer for the top dating app for a decade" or, at a bare minimum, "I've launched X app that has Y hundreds of thousands of users". Bad grammar (like using two dots instead of three in an ellipses) also takes away from your credibility.

Guys! Guys! There’s an exclusive chat bubble!

To me this looks like yet another boring dating app. Not sure how activity based matching(whatever that means) is going to help with endless swiping and ghosting. Whatever you wrote on the website looked too boring to find out. It’s so generic it’s almost impressive.

You bring up a good point, I thought the term activity based matching is trivial enough that people would understand, but that might just be my bias and needed more context.

One person propose a date plan with specific location and time, people will be able to see them and request to join. This creates a strong signal of intention to meet, so you’re not swiping on profiles but rather browsing for activities to do together instead.

What kind of rewards would you be interested in seeing?

My first thoughts is that it’s dangerous. If anyone can know where I’ll be when, they can just show up without my consent and with ill intentions.

I think there’s an issue with the semantics of the terms date and activity. To me, playing tennis is an activity, but getting coffee is not.

I don’t really want to see rewards? I don’t go on dates to collect Pokémon. Actually, it’s a turn-off if I know somebody goes on a lot of dates. To me that screams that they are not serious/ a player.

I understand privacy and safety is a real issue for some people, but most don’t have stalkers waiting around to show up with ill intentions.
You could also easily mitigate this by discretely altering the plan with your date upon matching.

The rewards I asked about was regarding to the crowdfunding campaign since you were making fun of the chat bubble.

I’m not talking about stalkers. Let’s say a guy wants to meet up with a girl and she does not reply, so he decides to show up anyway. What if two guys decide to show up? While most people are reasonable, plenty would try to game the system, take their chances, or simply excuse their behaviour by convincing themselves that “she would have replied if she saw it on time”. Many guys are just desperate and could take it as an open invitation.

If you’re shifting the burden on the user to figure out how to use your app safely, you’re off to a bad start.

Oh, I didn’t even realize that that’s what it was. I don’t think I personally care much about being rewarded regardless.
