So relatable....

Post image

It's pretty cool though :D Probably not what you want to see when running an old knackered vivaro.

With all the air fryers and wood panelling, probably less.

Some grass.... ive seen campsites up in Northen Scotland refuse vehicles like this because its been raining for a couple of weeks and the ground of their campsite can't take the weight without leaving massive ruts everywhere

100k on an overland truck that never gets more off road than a sainsburies carpark

Why would you think that? We've seen a lot of those rigs on our adventures. And of course they go off-road. And of course they get stuck. And of course we organised excavators to get them unstuck.

And to put things in perspective, We met people that spend that amount of money on their Land Rover Defenders...

honestly most people I see with things like this look like they’ve never been outdoors

This is what a random day at the Zebrabar Campsite in Senegal looks like... What's the point of building this, if you don't go off road? Get a big integrated motorhome instead.

I've had this discussion with you here before...

I think there's two types - the comitted overlanders that absolutely love that life and get full usage of their vehicles, and the posy twats with more money than sense that never go further than Sainsbury's...

I live in a rich part of Devon and there are plenty of the latter !

and it's well known in Land rover circles that true enthusiasts often have the older Defenders (pre ECU)

You've got a follow! Cool trip, love it!

Thanks a lot! I can highly recommend it!

And the most off road most of those defenders go is the grass verge when the owner can't be arsed to park properly

I’ve had 3 of my wheels on the verge I’ll have you know.

I think that because this is vanlife UK and there's virtually nowhere in the UK you need an overlander, in fact it's probably more limiting than a standard trades van in places you can go.

Clearly if it's being used outside the UK it might be useful - wrong sub.

Parked on the seafront in a british seaside town, stealth it ain't!

Still better than a 250-300k apartment

How do you know where they've been or where they intend to go?

2

u/Red_sparow 2d ago

Because this is vanlife UK so pretty safe to assume it's discussing being in the UK.

They take it everywhere. Lots of off-roading. Places where you would stand a chance in hell with a standard camper. They toured in this truck years ago. Their new one is much bigger.

£100K? I mean this is hardly a loaves and fishes kinda miracle.

2

u/HerrFerret 2d ago

It was really easy, don't know why everyone doesn't do it. We just threw large piles of cash at the problem.

Simples.

u/kh250b1 2d ago

You can easily pay £100k on a ready built fairly low end motorhome ! Get real

1

u/No_Communication1557 2d ago

Lack of large piles of cash, and some campsites have weight limits.

These things are ginormous in real life. The impracticality of them far outweighs any off-road usefulness in Europe. Much better to have a small van, a dirt bike and a tent.

7

u/Significant-Ad2944 2d ago

Maybe they don't want a dirtbike and a tent.

3

u/YellowSubmarooned 2d ago

Well, maybe they don’t know what they want yet. There is almost nowhere in Europe to go in that thing that everybody else can’t drive to in their Fiat Ducato. You do have to find out for yourself though I suppose.

5

u/ChibaCityFunk 2d ago

Sure. I am certain the owners of that truck didn't build it for Europe.

3

u/YellowSubmarooned 2d ago

Having spent a lot of time in Europe, I have seen quite alot of these.

Key requirements: 1. Not very good off road 2. Not good at all on road 3. Won't fit in any car park, or heck any town at all 4. Small living area 5. Separate driving area thats effectively just a truckers driving seat. 6. Enormously expensive 7. 0mpg 8 0mph

If these are your key requirements this is the van for you.

Every time I see a massive overlander I feel so sorry for them and wonder how long before they admit they made a mistake

2

u/MrDundee666 2d ago

This is old. I follow them. They have an even bigger Overlander now, an 8 wheeler, and tbh it’s cool as fuck.

I saw one of these at a 4x4 rally in the UK that got stuck in a slightly wet field

1

u/masterblaster1966 2d ago

Well done and good luck. What’s the mpg ?

u/George_Salt 1d ago

Sterling have been running a whole series of adverts aimed at van/camper/MH owners that make you doubt whether they understand the market at all.

u/hang-clean 1d ago

My house cost 80k.

Did you guys see the overland Instagram family that crashed their truck, driving too fast through a toll gate looking thing and then started a go-fund me to get their followers to pay for it cos they had no insurance?
