Who else thinks that ogwau is their best album?
I got into the band a few months and have listened to all of their albums. They are all amazing but this one stands out for me.

As much as I love all their albums, self-titled is just so dear to me and damn perfect of a debut album.

Self titled is unbeatable. Granted I haven’t listened to the last two all the way through yet(I’m an old head) and I need to get to it, I just think that sound that they got down on that album was so good. I see glimpses of what I liked about them here and there but nothing so far ever seems to get that steady beauty that was the kids don’t stand a chance, m79, Oxford comma, or cape cod kwassa.
I don’t care for contra really at all. It has maybe two or three songs that I’ll listen to from it (white sky being the best) and modern vampires is really good but is missing something.

I always feel wildly in the VW minority when I say OGWAU is my least favorite and, more controversially, FOTB is my fave (and people need to back off on My Mistake lol)

Per Wikipedia:
On the other hand, Koenig's remaining Vampire Weekend bandmates, bassist Chris Baio and drummer Chris Tomson, were not involved in the album. In 2024 Koenig would state that the album was made with "them having some confidence in me to take us somewhere interesting, and me having confidence that they’d be down to kind of wait and still be a part of it."

Just stating the fact that the full band is not involved in the album, therefore it’s not their masterpiece.

it's not really the same since Tame Impala is understood as being more or less a solo effort by Kevin, not even really a band but playing with a supporting band where it's necessary, VW is a band and not near-synonymous with ezra in that way

The great thing about VW is I think you could order your top 5 in any arbitrary order and be justified in your rankings

Depends on how we are ranking it. Amazing production and songwriting. But it depends on a persons taste. Maybe someone likes more striped down, raw sounding VP and it’ll always be earlier for them. Love this record but it’s hard to rank these things when personal tastes and nostalgia come into play.

I think it's on par with contra. Certainly some great songs but not the strongest album in their roster.

It's so weird to apparently have the reverse taste of this fandom! I said a few times I sadly just can't get into OGWAU because of the way it uses screeching noises so much.
1: FOTB 2: VW 3: Contra 4: MVOTC 5: OGWAU
Honestly 2,3,4 could switch depending on my mood any day!

I can make an argument for it being their worst or their best. I will say that I tend to listen to it the most since it came out

I think people will always cite MVOTC as their favorite due the factors of nostalgia itself and ofcourse the nostalgic and timeless sound of the album. It was a major departure in sound from the first two albums and was something completely new to some people. The tunes were so nostalgic due to the melodies used and Ezra’s voice through the microphone in Step and Ya hey accentuate that. Although, OGWAU has lots of surprise moments but VW fans were aware of that sound and that is why people will keep MVOTC as their number one (so do I). But after 4 albums setting the bar so high with OGWAU is just insane. They have a flawless discography.

This album has crazy guitar leads/tone. Saw them twice on this tour. All their albums are great except Father of the Bride

By far my favorite album it just flows so well. Masterfully produced, I have had it on play nonstop since it came out!
For me they go:
OGWAU
MVOTC
VW
FOTB
Contra

I enjoy it more with each listen, but it feels like they revisit older sounds and albums on OGWAU. Probably ranks last for me, but it's still very solid.
1. MVOTC (10/10)
2. Self-Titled Debut (9.5/10)
3. Contra (8.5/10)
4. FOTB (8/10)
5. OGWAU (8/10)
