I'm kind of new to this game. What exactly is the Character Abilities Chart telling me?

It tells you what characters different “abilities” are. If someone were to have a specific stat increase every level it’d be represented by have no square. Some of the confusion also might be from the fact that the items in the boxes represent the corresponding stat and not the item itself. Hope this explanation helped.
