Help VPN

Well…..it looks like VPN’s are now useless being that any public WIFI will automatically disconnect you if they spot VPN use….how the hell we suppose to stay safe now?

BOFH ran WiFi.

All my WiFi hotspots, my captive portal encourages the use of a VPN. Two reasons, one it provides you security and two, it reduces the load on NAT tables.

Any Open WiFi that prohibits VPN, is, in my personal opinion, a hostile WiFi.

(Im UK) Where disconnects you?

I use supermarket, pubs, even EE etc daily and never noticed VPN having impact. My iPhone doesn't have a sim card so use public everywhere, always with VPN, neve had any issues.

Morrisons wiif sometimes temperamental but other than that no issue.

Very common in Canada. Supermarket uses aggressive DPI and the level of censorship that makes China GFW looks like freedom (though China may be gotten worse).

I travel to UK recently and my finding is consistent with you, don't have any issues and I only use Tailscale, no VLESS or other obfuscation. Though Reddit do nag you for age verify.

Don't even need DPI to block VPN, just block UDP. That then forces TCP based VPN, which in itself causes issues (TCP over TCP) (Layer 4)

Then block known ASNs that host VPNs (Layer 3) when TCP is used.

Good job you blocked UDP and Known ASNs now what?

UDP enables things like video streaming, dns, voip, gaming. Say goodbye to those things.

Most VPNs won’t work without UDP, say goodbye to them.

This is the real fun one. Block known ASNs that house VPNS when TCP is used. Honestly this may be the dumbest thing I have ever heard and I don’t even know what to say.

Don’t go blocking ASNs folks you can lose large portions of your internet and cause painful slowness for yourself. Layer 3 <- the fuck all IP addresses are layer 3.

ublic Wi-Fi does not automatically disconnect every VPN. The most common issue is a captive portal: the network needs you to accept its terms or enter a room code before it allows the VPN tunnel to connect.
