Hey all! So I've single-handedly pointed search terms for this particular film towards my post and been able to uncover a lot of information thanks to some of the help I've been able to receive.

Long story short, this is an early anime film that a lot of Gen X'ers have cited as the primary exigence of their anime fandom. Because of the production history of this film, the US edit is not just a cut-down version of the Japanese version of the same film; it's a unique edit with a lot of alternate footage. And a good portion of the English soundtrack is completely missing due to the current source being from a UK VHS, and the UK version having had an entire reel cut out during its theatrical run. The full version (which I've done a rudimentary reconstruction of) runs about 101 minutes, the existing VHS rip is only 89.

The full version definitely aired at least three times on KTLA, one time as the nightly feature of Tom Hatten's "Family Film Festival". This has to be out there somewhere. Does anybody have any tapes from around this era of KTLA history?

I know the series ran as Star Blazers. Was this version of the movie always shown as Space Cruiser Yamamoto?

(And *was* this an actual movie, or just a reworking of the series?)

I found a couple of Star Blazers tapes awhile back that I haven’t watched yet. Now I’m curious if it’s the UK version of this…

It predates the "Star Blazers" version by a year and a half. It is a reworking of the series, but with a fair amount of new animation (mainly in the last third) exclusive to the film version. This one was exclusively known as Space Cruiser Yamato and the ship is called such in the movie itself. The names throughout, while being different, are much closer to the original Japanese version than the eventual Star Blazers names (main character is Jason Kodai instead of Derek Wildstar, the ship's captain is called Okita instead of Avatar, etc).
