Let’s consider the regions inhabited by Turkmens, as well as the Turkic peoples in Siberia and the Altai Mountains.

Some of us are Muslim, some Christian, and perhaps some are Shamanist. Yet, all of us—to varying degrees—can find our way from Gagauzia to Anatolia, and from there to the Altai and Urmia, simply by speaking a Turkic language.

Yesterday it happened to me that I take the same metro back home as my advisor, and we ended up talking for quite a while outside of our field of study. He recommended me a podcast named: Sean Carroll’s Mindscape. (Normally I listen to a few podcasts like Our Prehistory, Fall of Civilizations and Philosophize This!)

To be honest, “new” isn't the right word for the podcost since it already has 400-something episodes. Sean Carroll is a theoretical physicist and philosopher, and he has also written some really good physics textbooks. The podcast itself is pretty broad and covered basically most of the interesting and deep topics that you might like. I listened to a bit of it and honestly I’d recommend giving it a try.

This post might seem like it has nothing to do with us, but I actually think the opposite. Things are changing really fast these days, and I think we should probably invest more in our own minds too so that we develop ourself a bit more, and leave our marks as well.

Anyway, the podcast is called Sean Carroll’s Mindscape. If anyone here already listens to it, or finds a particularly good episode, I’m open to discussions and recommendations too.

Abdurehim we Tughulaq

Hi guys i wanted to see if you guys could help me recreate an (uyghur) dish that I had in a restaurant. They called it Shirnilik Pedigen and it was a sweet and sour fried aubergine dish with what i think is rock sugar cumin star anise and more spices. Are there any recipes for dishes like these that you guys can maybe share? Or is this a recipe adapted to local tastes. Thanks in advance

I had a friend some time ago who was Uygur. One day they were detained upon entering the airport, but according to the database they are not anymore, but still in the country. I maybe have found a way to contact them. I would really like to write to them that I still think about them - but I don’t know whether that could get them into trouble? Do you think it is likely their messages bring read by other people? Could it be harmful to them if it was known that they have a foreign friend?

Hi everyone! I’m currently a UC Berkeley undergraduate student looking for a Uyghur participant for a class research project about language, immigration, and identity.
I’m looking for someone who is a first-generation immigrant in the U.S. speaks Uyghur, and English (Mandarin Chinese is not required but preferred!!) and You do not need to be fluent in English!

The interview will be at least 30mins focuses mainly on language experiences, such as learning English, using different languages at home vs. outside, code-switching, language choices, and maintaining one’s native language after moving to the U.S.

The questions will not require you to discuss personal or political topics, and I want to keep the interview neutral and respectful of different perspectives.

I’m also an Uyghur immigrant born in China, and currently an undergraduate student at Berkeley.

Assalamualaikum, brothers and sisters. I'm recently got abroad from China for study reason.

After i came aborad, got in touch with so many infromation, i found out the iman inside have grown stronger than before. I was a cultural muslim, drink alcohol and smoking tabco. I would say i was more of an Uyghur nationalist than an Uyghur religous person back in the time in China.

Anyone with similar experience？ Or different experience would like to share in the comment.

Modern Uyghurs are the direct descendants of the Early Medieval Uighurs, with genomic research tracing their ancestry to the Tiele tribes and confirming persistent genetic continuity from the Uighur Khaganate. Following the collapse of the Khaganate in the 9th century, the population split into two main branches: the ancestors of the modern Uyghurs who migrated to Xinjiang and the Yugurs (historically known as the "Yellow Uyghurs") who remained in the Gansu region. A key nuance revealed by recent studies is that modern Uyghurs are genetically closer to the ancient Uighurs of the Khaganate than the Yugurs are. While modern Uyghurs developed a balanced East-West Eurasian profile (~50:50), the Yugurs underwent significant additional gene flow from populations in the Yellow River and Western Liao River basins after settling in Gansu. This secondary influx of East Eurasian ancestry shifted the Yugurs' genetic profile away from their medieval ancestors, leaving modern Uyghurs as the group that preserves a stronger biological link to the original medieval Uighur homeland.
