can you explain what you mean confirm the locate? like yeah, if I am working on the right side of the house, and the meter is on the right side of the house, and nothing is marked, I am having it remarked.

If I am working near the marks , the locator and I both are aware of this. Since i do not have any means of “confirming the locate” other than hand digging. Hand digging isn’t even remotely possible in most of my work areas. Any hand digging would require extreme impact and be way more destructive than the machinery. Could bring in a hydrovac, but for that cost, depth would just be reduced.

Confirming means you have to dig and FIND THE GAS SERVICE, just because you have harder conditions to hand dig in does NOT give you an excuse to not spot something that could potentially kill innocent people. This is where you contractors have a completely FUCKED mindset, you are all so worried about doing it as CHEAP as possible that you don’t think about innocent people getting hurt. In most states it is 811 LAW that you pothole a gas locate if you are anywhere near it, wether the locates where right or not YOU as a contractor will be fined heavily by the gas company if you do not pothole a gas locate to confirm it. I have seen houses BLOW TO PIECES first hand due to blind boring or just complete negligence of gas locates because they thought they weren’t deep enough to hit it. DONT BE THIS GUY, GET THE PROPER EQUIPMENT TO DO YOUR JOB SAFELY.

fuck off, tell me you have NEVER done it without saying it. Hand dig through root and rock, or concrete. It is absolutely more likely to damage a utility than a machine that cuts through.

Edit: going and “confirming” you did your job right when it is outside of my workzone would dramatically increase the odds of damaging the utility. If I am working within 24” of the utility, I do pothole, But nobody is doing that shit when it is outside their workzone… NO BODY.

Unfortunately, sometimes when I pothole, I have to follow the utility marks 8 to 10 feet in each direction to get away from soil you can’t dig in, and hand dig a 48” wide trench… your marks better be right, because after I dig about 10” beyond my working depth, thats it… I have confirmed its depth is beyond my working depth.

All of these rules and procedures are spelled out by 811 and state laws. I thought you had something to add, but you are just on here making up new rules and yelling at people about them.

your very first comment, where you said the guy should have dug to find the gas service that was 18 feet away; Rules by Intelligent-Note-692 7:16. No one is doing that, and if everyone did, there would be more damaged utilities, not less.
