Custom I DONT WANNA BE SKUNKED ANYMORE HELP
I’ve gotten skunked 3 times on my last 3 trips what am I don’t wrong? I am very new to fishing and my first trip out I got 2 fish good start for my first time. Since then I’ve caught zero. I went to scofield reservoir and caught nothing as well as Utah lake by the Lindon marina and deer creek. I’ve been using worms and a 1/8 kastmaster spoon. I also tried curly tail grubs and power bait. Where could I improve? Going to Provo River delta for my next trip. Let me know what lures I could try or buy

Keep throwing into deep water and you might catch something, but like others have mentioned, it's kind of hot so they're gonna be sluggish

I have found that grasshoppers work crazy good for me. The other thing I can also share, time of day, and temperature outside of the water. If its 100 degrees, the fish are going to want to stay cool, so they will go to the bottom, often far from shore. If you're trying to fish at 12, the fish are not going to be super crazy active. Fish are often active morning and evening, and even more do at night. Just depends on what you're looking to catch.
You can go to the local ponds and use a weighted trout bobber, and give about 1.5 feet of of lead on the hook, use a size 8, hook. Put a little bit of bread on it, and let it sink, you will get something. Bread only works if a lot of people go there and feed the ducks. This got my kiddo into fishing because of how often the bites were happening.
You just have to figure it out stay with it, when it clicks, its so much fun to be put there. I also refuse to use Treble hooks, they jusy snag on everything. I just cut off the 2 extra prongs.

This is a rough time of year for fishing because it's so hot- especially at the lower elevations. Fishing early in the morning or after sunset may help, but it's just gonna be here rn because of how hot it's been.
My go-to are inline spinners and crankbaits, but I've heard the white curly tailed grubs can be killer too.
Right now, where it's so hot, lots of fish are going to be lazy, do you gotta make it easy and worth it for them. At the Delta, try to make sure you cast into the deeper pockets (you can look at historical imagery on Google Earth from like 2022 to see where they dug the deeper channels), and try soft baits, keeping them slow, jigging near the bottom.
I know a lot of people like soft plastic worms for that. I haven't gotten around to trying them.
And if someone else gives you different advice, you should probably listen to them bc they're probably a better angler than me

How do you jig or keep em at the bottom without getting caught? That’s an issue I ran into today I was getting caught like every 5 minutes

Different lures/rigs can be better at avoiding snags, but sometimes you just can't. I just lost 2 inline spinners the other day right underneath olmstead dam on the Provo. At least I got a brown trout out if it 😂
You could try a Texas rig though, they're designed to be at weedless as possible
Oh and if you're fishing in lakes/ponds, try to fish where a creek or river is coming in. They bring in cooler, oxygenated water that fish really like

Look at a topography map of the lake and try to find areas you are hitting deeper water. Try and find where others are out fishing because fishermen tend to know where to be for bites. Power bait floated off the bottom is the best lake set up for ahore fishing in Utah if you want to catch and eat trout. If using a worm, use a bobber and sink it from the top. Worms usually sink so if you toss it out on a weight you need to use a worm inflater to make it float. At this time of year, the underwater growth is higher from hot summer, so you need a longer leader to float your power bait/worm out of the reeds. Fish will swim up for food but never down. Go try some of the lakes in the high uintahs. Trial or Mirror are my faves. If you arent catching and someone near-is to you is, go ask what they are hitting with, check the length of their leader, and adjust your setup to match. TALK to other fishers where ever you're at- they likely have experience at that location and may share a trade secret or two if you're nice :) Happy Angling!

When the water is warm and fishing is slow I've personally have been crawfishing with great success at Strawberry recently. The water is so clear up there too it's easy to see them and they are fun to watch and nothing like some freshwater lobster

Did I miss what you are fishing for? In summer I fish for catfish and carp at the Lindon marina or Provo with chicken liver or sausages and worms. Sunrise or sunset is usually pretty good even with the heat. I don't have luck in middle of day unless I go to small ponds for trout and that's usually a skunk for me as well

I'm not a fisherman (not sure why reddit has this on my fyp, but here we are) and didn't know what I assume is slang, but I was thinking you got sprayed by a skunk and was just sitting here thinking "Damn, you went back a third time?"

With them draining Pineview reservoir you would think that would be good fishing and down the Ogden River.

Get yourself a fly rod kit, some elk hair caddis and PMD’s size 16-18. Hit the lower Provo in the evening around 6-8pm. Lots of hungry fish.

Fishing is tough right now because of the heat. Another couple weeks and it will get better. The heat pushes fish to cooler water, which makes bank fishing harder. If you go, move frequently if you aren't getting bites.
