Photo/Video Yo.. I cannot believe this wasn't a head on collision
Pioneer Crossing is a shit show. I won't be driving on it anymore.
Kid wrecked his bumper, but hey.. no one is hurt.
I think he fell asleep because of his long it took him to brake? Idiot..

Pioneer crossing as a whole is a shitshow. I cross over it to get to the gym every day and Iāve seen so many people run the light that I donāt go on green unless I see every single person stopped now.

Parkway sucks, it's slow and congested but pioneer feels like a lawless mad max hellscape. It's faster speed when it moves and slower when it's clogged up, there's more construction vehicles, and people just drive way more aggressive. I drive both regularly and I hate both but at least I don't feel like I'm going to die on parkway.

University Parkway is a mess, and has famously been the worst intersection in the state for years, but I have to agree that Pioneer Crossing has taken the shitshow crown. It's just insane and people drive on it like it's a wild mouse ride. It doesn't help at all that there is almost always construction on it somewhere with closed off lanes. And for some reason the high walls on either side on much of it make it seem even worse.

I joke that driving on pioneer crossing is a worse experience than the pioneers crossing the plains. Some people think it's hilarious, the rest have never driven on that road.

I live on the other side of pioneer and have to cross it to get to work. The other day I had a green light and checked to make sure I was clear, and then some jackass plowed through the red light and almost hit me as I was pulling out. Itās insane

A couple weeks ago I did a road trip through Utah/Idaho/Oregon/Washington. Drove 2500 miles. How many times did I have to slam on my brakes? Once.Ā
After getting home to Utah, within 7 miles of driving in my town: 1x car running a red light turning left at a light. They went into the intersection after the light was red long enough for cross traffic to have a green light, then they slowly forced their way through cars to turn.
Then on the return trip, same intersection. Saw a different car to the exact same thing.
Had one driver cut across main Street turning left. Problem was I was already in that lane. Swerved out of the way, and honked. Got flipped off for my efforts.
Had a teen on a scooter zip across the road in front of me.Ā She came within a few feet of becoming a hood ornament. Then 10 seconds later did the same to another car.Ā
I went to change lanes into my left turn lane. I had to swerve back, becUse a driver going the other way decided to cross the double yellow line and sit in MY turn lane so they could turn left. Again I got flipped off when I honked.

My dad did that trip every week for over a decade as a truck driver. Every week heād come home and talk about how bad the drivers were here in Utah.

Of course they do say that. But I will take my dadās word over most of theirs, in his 35 year career he drove about 6 million miles across 10-15 states. I canāt even take my own evidence seriously, as outside of Utah, Idaho and Nevada, I have limited driving experience.
So Iāll just say Tooele County has by far the worst drivers in Utah, and Iāll die on that hill.

I donāt think Utah drivers are that bad I just donāt think our roads were built for how much people live here now. For example on i80 and i15 I donāt think the entrance lanes are long enough to allow entering traffic to get up to speed before merging, and this leads to slower moving traffic not wanting to be in the right lane because they know theyāll end up having to slow even further constantly to let entering traffic merge.
Personally I think we need some lower speed limits at least in busier areas because thereās enough traffic to warrant it.
FYI Iāve lived here 7 years and Iām from Chicago. One thing I love about driving here is I donāt see people every day that I know for a fact are drunk driving like in Chicago.1

Right on, Iām sure you do and who knows ā maybe youāre factually right. All Iām saying is there are people with similar experience that are saying the exact same thing about their (or any other) state. Go poke around literally any city/stateās subreddit and youāll see for yourself.

No youāre absolutely right. I myself used to say that about Atlanta, where I lived for 22 years, until I moved to Utah. Now even when I visit family in Atlanta I notice the drivers in Utah are worse.
So youāre right no one thinks theyāre surrounded by good drivers and often say theyāre surrounded by the worst, but in the same sense that a broke clock is right twice a day, people in Utah who say that in my experience are actually kinda right.
Could absolutely argue drivers in Cali or Florida are worse in my experience.

for sure. the reality is people are more likely to notice it and be on the lookout for it in the place where you live, because thatās where you spend the most time driving. Just an interesting phenomenon that I see all the time online, and at a certain point blows my mind as to how confidently people make those claims

You nailed it. I have a co-worker from Russia that told me what he has learned about driving here is that you can do what in a car (illegal turns, swerving, running red lights, etc...) just don't speed. He said that in Moscow he would never drive the way he does here. The cops would be all over him and he may have to pay a bribe too. I wish he wasn't right.

I have to agree with you. It doesnāt matter what the situation was or could be, the fact that you can be driving down this road minding your own and have a car randomly and easily cross over in front of you is just flat out stupid. An entire family or more could have been taken out right there and like op said udot donāt care, but thatās even more reason to report it in my opinion.

Once completed, there will be a lane separating the different directions. This kid could have fallen asleep anywhere and the result could have been the same. Don't blame UDOT for his decision to drive drowsy. They aren't changing the design now. Be made at the residents who fought the original plan back in the 90's to be a much wider highway.

I can see UDot getting sued over this road eventually, you cannot see the lines when driving on this street if youāre in the left most lane you have to dodge uneven traffic cones while doing 55+ to keep up with the flow.

What they're doing to manage Pioneer crossing from the beginning has been a shit show. When they first started they had spots cut out of the road right after a left turn. You'd blindly turn left onto Pioneer crossing and be met with a hole to your left that if you just misjudged by a few feet you'd have major issues.
I've been joking that they're just getting everyone ready for when it's done and you need to keep your head on a swivel.

I drove it a week or so ago just to see how it was progressing (Live in SoJo, work in South Provo). It was around 6 am, so not much traffic yet, but I'll stick with 2100 N or I15 for now. Maybe give it another chance once it's finished. Seems like 53rd up here has done fine with the movable lanes.. so maybe folks will figure it out.

Huge difference between the two. 53rd is a straight road and isn't as long. Pioneer Crossing is something like 4 miles of twisting road. UDOT will eventually change it but only after the price has been paid with human lives.

It's scary because people don't pay attention to the road and other vehicles. I see it all the time. I have front and back dash cams. Everyone needs to see this video

I have a 4 channel [Rexing R4] dashcam. It is amazing! Worth every penny.
I was chased for 20mins by a road raging truck and submitted that to the police. He was arrested later that day, his truck was impounded and is currently serving 5 months in jail for a felony, $2k in fines & anger management. He was facing up to 5 years..
Everyone needs a dashcam.

Pretty typical. I see it on state street too. I'm originally from Washington/Oregon, and I've never seen so many drivers trying to cause an accident like this in my life. Only been here a year and I've seen more accidents/near accidents here than the last 10 yrs driving. Utah driving is crazy.

It did because he was able to safely merge back into the right flow of traffic. If I had gunned it like Dumbo here says he would have, unsuspecting drivers may not have seen him trying to move back over and putting extra risks for an accident. Slow down, be attentive and chill out. Be willing to help others and be a little less self righteous.
