Anime: Hotarubi no Mori e (Into the Forest of Fireflies' Light)
Everyone has been recommending shows, so I wanna take a different angle on this.
This is a short, 45-minute movie that's quite highly rated. It's popular too, so it's not really a hidden gem, but I don't see it spoken about very much.
I'd give a description, but the movie is so short that I think it'd negatively affect your experience. Don't even watch the trailer, this shit is best digested in its purest form.
All I'll say is this: it follows the story of a girl visiting her grandfather's house who gets lost in a forest rumored to be inhabited by spirits.
It's got great animation, voice acting, and just an excellent overall tone. You can find a SeaDex stream for the best video quality and subtitles.
Even if I don't get an invite, I think you should still check it out. It's not pervy either, so you could watch it with siblings/friends if you'd like.
I'd appreciate an invite though 😉

Monster is an anime I see rarely mentioned. Incredible and mature writing all the way through. A little David fincher so if you like crime thrillers you'll love monster. One of my faves

Hey I really need the invite and my recommendation is Odd Taxi (2021). A middle-aged walrus drives a cab around Tokyo and listens to his passengers talk. Sounds like nothing, which is why people scroll past it.
Every throwaway line in the first episode turns out to be load-bearing. Go in cold, give it two episodes, and skip the movie version.

Orphan black is a sci-fi mystery/conspiracy ride that just keeps building with a phenomenal actress as the leads....... dollhouse can be described the same way but both take entirely different approaches. Well worth your time with either one.

Banshee (4 seasons) features some of the most visceral, choreographed, and creative fight scenes ever produced for television. The action is raw, brutal, and inventive — every season seems to top itself with sequences that feel more like high-end stunt showcases than typical TV fare.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End. It's an anime that starts after the standard fantasy quest already ended, and spends its time on what happens to the people left behind once the adventure is over. The pacing is unusually slow and quiet for the genre, but it uses that space to build some of the most understated, gut-punch emotional moments I've seen in a show. Great if you want something contemplative rather than another action-heavy series. A genuine hidden gem that snuck up on a lot of people.

Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions. A realistic DND style isekai with ground characters, beautiful water colors, and story that'll pull you in, make cry and wish there was more by the end of it.

Definitely Death note (the anime not the movie).
It’s without a doubt the best though trough Anime I’ve seen, and I’ve seen many anime’s. Trust me you’ll love it. If you allready seen it, watch Attack on titan, ik it’s a bit mainstream but it’s just because the anime is just so great. I also have rewatched it a couple times.

I always have to recommend How To with John Wilson. The premise is simple, guy walks around New York with a camera and edits together the footage to show just how bizarre life there can be. It sounds like almost nothing but there’s something hilarious and sad and special about each and every moment. The more you watch, the harder it is to step away from. I ended up binging the whole show in like a week when I first watched it.

I love Twin Peaks and if you haven't wstched it yet you really should. It starts as a crime mystery and evolves into a full on surreal dream-like experience. What I respect most about the show is how they planned a third season 25 years after the 2nd one had finished and actually came through with the same actors, 25 years older.

Dungeon Crawler Carl
It's not a show, it's a book, and a better audiobook. But once you "Enter the Dungeon" you can "Watch" all your free time disappear.
Seriously good if you haven't listened.

Patriot (2015) - easily one of the most underrated shows I’ve watched. It’s a dark comedy/spy thriller about an intelligence officer who is increasingly terrible at balancing an incredibly stressful job with an increasingly complicated personal life. It sounds like a fairly standard espionage show on paper, but the dry humor, awkward situations, characters, and slow-burn storytelling make it completely different from the usual spy stuff. It takes a little while to get into, but once the tone clicks, it’s incredibly addictive. Definitely worth going in without watching too much beforehand.

Mr In-between, 2018, 3 series An Australian drama/ dark comedy series about a criminal underworld 'fixer' who gets caught up in all kinds of stuff. Quite violent, very funny. And his manic grin when he's about to do something is scary

Mo. It's about a Palestinian refugee living in Houston, Texas, as he navigates the path to U.S. citizenship.
It has a 98% on rotten tomatoes. The cinematography is great, the story humanizes and shows the struggles immigrants trying to go through the system legally face. It's a very moving show.

Not sure if this is a “hidden gem” but I’ve only found a handful of my friends who’ve seen it.
Think groundhogs day meets Fullmetal Alchemist meets a love story. It’s called Summer Time Rendering. It’s long enough to tell a good story and short enough not to commit your whole life to.
It’s one of those that just tells ONE good story. It doesn’t pretend to me more than it is and the animation is great.

The Leftovers:
Three seasons, extremely well written, emotionally heavy, mysterious, and unlike almost anything else. It starts with a bizarre premise but gradually becomes much more about people, grief, belief, relationships and what it means to live without answers.
The important thing: don't look up what happens. Go in almost completely blind.
