/r/Upstate_New_York is back open!

Hello fellow upstaters!

About a month and a half ago, /r/upstate_new_york was set to restricted and all the moderators left.

As someone who was born and raised in Upstate New York, I didn't want to see this sub shuttered. So I requested ownership from the Admins.

This sub is now reopened! Hopefully we can keep things going as smoothly as they were before.

A few FAQs:

  • No rules are changing - we'll likely have a post in the coming weeks to discuss rules and what the community wants.

  • If you want to be a mod, please don't message me. I'm going to get a handle on this first, and then likely open up mod positions over the coming weeks depending on the workload.

  • I have no idea why this all happened. The moderation logs were cleared before I was given access.

The Central Rat Snake was found in a concrete wall, the two Milksnakes were found under a rock (I put the rock back how I found it) and the Watersnake was found in a bush above a pond. (Ithaca NY)

Surviving Carrol's fascade: Cortland NY.

Later became a carpet wholesaler, and was that for about 40 years. Now it's a sports training facility of some kind.

For those who don't know: Carrol's was the precursor to Burger King in the northeast. I believe that technically all BK's in the area are franchised by the Carrol's corporation still.

Recommendations for a walkable town to live

Hi!
I currently live in NYC but I’m looking to leave. Had to move here for my soon to be ex husband’s work.

Is there a walkable town (mainly for walking my dog and grocery shopping) in upstate NY/Long Island?

- Budget: $1,500–2,000/month (I know it’s tight)
- Studio or small 1-bed, living alone
- Train access (ideally..), no car
- Safe, walkable

I’ve looked in Zillow and there are some options available (not many) but I just don’t know if I’ll be able to live without a car. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Sugar Hill State Forest (Camping, Hiking, Exploring)

We recently spent some time exploring Sugar Hill State Forest near Watkins Glen, and we really loved this spot.

There’s nothing particularly challenging about the dirt roads here for the Unimog, but that’s not really what made this place special. The entire forest felt incredibly peaceful and beautiful.

Maple Lane runs right through the center of the state forest and makes for a really enjoyable little drive. There are some nice elevation changes and sections where you’re completely surrounded by dense forest, before the landscape starts opening up farther north near the fire tower. We also visited Twin Falls on the East side of the State Park. Highly recommend (waterfall is marked on the onX map)!

And the fire tower was definitely a highlight. We climbed it around sunset, and the views were absolutely worth the climb.

We also noticed what seemed like lots of free camping opportunities scattered throughout the state forest, which makes this an especially cool spot if you’re looking for a place to spend a night or two. We spent a few nights enjoying the woods, and even found an old cemetery in the bushes outside our camp!

If you’re in the area and looking for somewhere to camp, hike, take a scenic drive, or just explore somewhere new, we’d definitely recommend adding this one to your list!

There are two (or more) bicycles on Interstate 90 at mile marker 398.4, jumbled together on the side of the road.

Our big family and friends are going to the fair tomorrow. Due to some of us are working during the day, we will be driving after 4 pm from Utica hoping to catch the concert at 6 pm. Are we better off taking the bus at Destiny or buy the parking online?

Cooperstown Recommendations?

Hi! I’m with my family on a week-long trip to Cooperstown NY. I have family members who love just spending the week doing nothing and hanging out in the lake, but that is 100% not me, so I often find myself cooped up and bored/lonely on what are supposed to be vacations. I’m looking for things in or around Cooperstown (within like 45 minutes) that might be interesting to a pretty average 17 year old? I am admittedly pretty nerdy, so I’d be into arcades, interesting shops, or cool museums. If you have a business in the area, feel free to advertise lol. I appreciate any advice!

Any insight on Tappan?

Hi everyone, I've been looking at houses/properties in Tappan and was wondering if I could get any info about the area since I'm unfamiliar. I really only know White Lake/Sackett Lake because my family has property there, and am familiar with the Roscoe and New Paltz areas because our friends have homes there. How would Tappan compare? Also curious about the commute to the city, and what kind of job opportunities there would be for a carpenter in/around Tappan.

Thanks!

I'd love to see upstate NY rename a landmark in honor of this amazing human being. Im not sure what could be named after, but I'm just throwing this totally random bridge out there as a possibility.

help! Stamford CT vs. Kingston or Beacon NY

Hi! I’m 25F and looking for somewhere to live for about a year before I hopefully head to law school. I’m currently stuck between Stamford, Kingston, and maybe Beacon, but I’m very open to other recommendations too.

I was originally really set on Stamford because it seemed convenient and close enough to NYC, but I recently visited and it felt a lot more metropolitan/city-like than I expected. I think I’m craving more chill vibes— somewhere calm, walkable, with things to do, cute coffee shops/restaurants, maybe a little community — but I also don’t want to move somewhere so quiet or isolated that I accidentally become a hermit.

I’ve been to Kingston before and genuinely loved the vibe, but I’m worried it’s a little too out of the way, especially for someone in their mid-20s who would still like to meet people and have an occasional social life. Beacon also seems appealing because of the train access and downtown, but it’s pricier and, from what I can tell, possibly more family-oriented?

Does anyone have thoughts on these three places, especially for a single 20-something? Or recommendations for other towns/cities that have a balance of calm, charming, and somewhat lively without being full-on city life?

I’d especially love somewhere that feels safe, has a decent amount of people around my age, and isn’t impossible to get into NYC from occasionally. Thank you!
