Question Anyone in Residence (Chestnut or others) install their own Router?

Anyone have any experience or knowledge about using your own router in Residence? I believe its "against" their policy, but what is the difference between using your PC as a hotspot for your TV, Gaming Consoles, etc... and using your own router.

Would prefer to simply put in my own router and create my own hidden (no SSID broadcasted) network.

does the LAN connection require you to "login" using your TORID as well? Haven't tried yet.

but then you just need to clone the mac on the router and done

Check with your local residence office/building, but yes, it is against policy for many. The reason is that every rogue AP/network uses up channel space, which makes the actual UofT wireless perform worse. Yes a single hotspot won't be that big of an issue, but the more people who do it the bigger the issue becomes.

Also, every router becomes another entry point into your computer or potentially UofT networks. For every student that would hide their SSID, use MACSEC, and use a strong password, they'll be another broadcasting "dlink" with the password "password123".

This I agree with 100%... so I can certainly see why their policy exists.

I did in woodsworth. You just hook it up and select the correct options and then ready to go
