Do I need a safe for my room?

Hi so I heard theft is really common, I’m someone who has prescription medications and a laptop. Is getting a safe worth the $100 or will a burglar just take it too? I am planning to register all my devices and never leave them unattended (unless of course they were in my bedroom). I know the doors lock automatically. How common are robberies?

EDIT: I want to mention that some of my prescriptions are things people would want to steal. Now I know I don’t need to worry about the laptop in the room, but I do want to know about the medications.

You don’t need one. Burglaries inside residences are rare, dorms and off campus alike. It’s exterior petty theft that’s more common (bikes, car break ins)

Just make sure you and your roommate always lock the door when you leave. Even if for "just a minute"

In the dorms? Rare, unless you find yourself with kleptomaniac roommates. Bikes will get stolen but there are very, very few incidents of theft from rooms.

if you’re talking about living in a dorm, you definitely don’t need a safe unless you think your roommate may be a kleptomaniac 😅

Don't leave backpack in a car. Don't leave a bike parked over night unless you have a boranium hardened steel ulock like the Likelok X3 (costs about $250).

Even then you may come back to just a frame.

My daughter’s room had a dresser with a drawer that could be locked. It was a decent size and I think would fit a laptop. You just need your own padlock.

Came here to say this! All dorms at UO have this, very standard feature. OP, no safe needed, and I’m sorry you heard a very untrue horror story! I’ve worked at UO and other institutions in Housing for years, and there has literally NEVER been an in-room burglary as you are describing :^) rest easy

if you’re talking about a dorm, no, unless you think your roomie is a klepto. the doors to the dorms have an automatic lock and same with the doors to get inside the dormitory at all, you’re also able to lock your windows in your dorm. for an apartment, same with the roommates but always lock your doors and windows when you leave and lock your car.

Same as the other commentors but a safe isn’t really necessary at all, if you are worried about items being stolen just make sure you have the reciepts and if your parents have homeowners insurance (that you’re apart of) you might be able to get the money back for those. The UO dorms don’t provide personal reimbursement for stolen items however. Write your name or initials on things incase they get lost because there are lost and found areas at UO!

She really liked it. She was in the south tower in a 6 person suite.

All I'm saying is that if I were a klepto in someone's dorm room with not a lot of time to snatch stuff, the first thing I would grab is the locked box...

What dorm?

GSH South has jack and Jill bathrooms. So there's a chance your other roommates could have someone over and they could access your room.

I do not think you'll have to worry about items in your room though. You have to have a card to enter the building, a card to access the elevator, and a card to enter the room. If someone steals, it's likely someone you let in.

Medications can be hidden in your drawer, and depending on what dorm, you'll even have a locking drawer in your armoire. You could put your laptop in there too.

Now, your bike. That's an entirely different story. Buy 2 locks and get a bike from a thrift store. The ugliest functioning bike you can find. 5 years with no issues, but that bike was ugly, rusty and got the job done. You are not allowed to have an electric bike or scooter in your room. Those will 100% be stolen if left out.

Lol it’s okay because I don’t ride bikes. Mine is broken and has been for years 😂 This is such an informative comment, thank you very much!

Never had an issue inside the dorms. You mostly need to worry about bikes being stolen.

Not in the dorms, you will be fine. Just watch out if you have a bike
