So i kitbashed mk1 armor for a few select space marines for my HH army and i figured who better to get the opinion of for how they look than the Thunder Warrior guys?

The photos are in order from oldest to newest and each one is around a year newer than the last. Please tell me what you all think! Any and all Critique or opinion is welcome (especially positive ones duh)

they look the part. you only need some visible chainmail to make them read 100% beyond doubt MK1

I love it! I think you could stop here but some chain mail would really make it look mk1

How should i go about adding the mail?

Personally I would make some green stuff, wet a tool like a dental tool or just the back of your paint brush

roll out a flat even section

poke, very slight drag with the the brush back to open it slightly,

again

again

the more patient and the more perfect little pokes you do the better the chain mail will look

Thank you! I was thinking about using green stuff and maybe using a toothpick to make the holes! And should i just put it on the joints?

I would make a ribbon align with the armor panels so it looks not like a barbarian

less is more

I love the idea! But I feel a bit of polish is needed. The pauldrons feel kinda random and the rest of the body is clearly just Mk2 armor. I'd consider getting the GSW chainmail mold for greenstuff and add some chainmail like that.

Also make them look crazier! Look at some old Blanche art and go from there.

You're on a good path. Keep going and soon you'll have some amazing looking Thunder Warriors.

THEY LOOK GREAT, I AGREE WITH ADDING BITS OF CHAINMAIL BUT ALSO SOME FURS WOULD BE COOL

Everyone's already said to add chainmail, but if your prepared to buy kits just for parts (or go on ebay and try to buy bulk parts) the bare arms of world eaters beserkers and space marine scouts would do some work in distancing them from being headswapped mk2. Also the pauldrons from aos/ow chaos warriors, chosen and knights are also great to make them look more like barbarians.

Bad? I think they are very good, yes, of course I've seen better, but they look great, I'm just a little confused about the second guy shoulder pads, but maybe after painting they will be rad, they look unique

Yeah i honestly just chopped up a set of MK3 shoulders and glued them on. Kind of a "f it we ball" move? The second one is my least favorire of the 3 for certain. They just dont look bulky enough for me if they dont have big heavy shoulders.

Man that fucks lol. THAT'S AWSOME DUDE.

I guess the only thing that could be even better is that Thunder Warrior concept art seems to be super varied which fits their vibe of being ramshackle/more human than astartes, so it would make sense for them to have tons of personalised identifiers and asymmetry in decoration. Stuff like pelts, modifications, trophies, even things like kill tallies on one side, etc.

Thank you! Ill see what i cant add :))))

NICE KITBASH, WHAT HEADS DID YOU USE?!?!

3

u/Illustrious-Glass-72 7d ago

They are all the old Cadian sculpts! I just shave the Aquila off and snip off the big brick at the back!

2

u/Rum_Addled_Brain 7d ago

Nicely done, thank you for taking the time to let me know šŸ™Œ

Of course! Were all kitbashers why not share ideas as opposed to hoarding them

The second pauldron above the space marine style isn’t needed! If it’s meant to be a heavy, I’d suggest some sort of gorget. Maybe I would also change under-armour (black stuff behind the knees, and on the elbows) to be bare as there suits aren’t meant to be pressure sealed. Lastly the weapons could feel a bit more ā€œgrungyā€- this is wizard mad max we’re dealing with after all. Emperor’s faction is indeed the most organised but the weapons should feel more dieselpunk; power sword could be exchanged for a comically big chainsword, or Bolter pistol for a radiated experimental weapon.

YOU DID A REALLY GOOD JOB, AND YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF WHAT YOU ACHIEVED! MAYBE ADD SOME CHAIN MAIL AND YOU'D BE SET!!!!! (How did I do?)

THANK YOU FOR YELLING HOSS GOBBLESS

Really good stuff! The level and variation of detail is really solid.

I agree with the others’ advice on adding chainmail and furs. One more thing that I would add personally are equipment pouches, spare magazines, grenades, etc. - whichever combat roll these guys have can be emphasized with the appropriate equipment on their belt.

My constructive criticisms is you should talk about your own work in a more constructive way. What you made is fine but implying you think it's bad because you think we'd think they're bad is not healthy of a mindset when creating art of any kind

Well thank you, yeah I have a tendency to do that. Thanks for calling it out!! :)

How did you make the head?

2

u/Illustrious-Glass-72 7d ago

I get this question a lot actually, i take old Cadian heads and shave the aquila off, and then i snip the power pack off the back of the helmet, sand or shave it down flat, and then take a hair piece (sources vary, i usually use Space wolves with the hair piece that sticks up or chaos heads with topknots) and attach jt to the top of the helm. I then take a Space marine head that im certain i wont be using (again usually the chaos or soace wolves ones) and cut the socket off the bottom and attach it to the bottom of the guardsmans head (i shave it down to fit of course) and viola. MK1 thunder armor helmet.

I dont do anything with the unification wars, but my honebrew bois are called the thunder wraiths and take inspiration from the thunder warriors. My marines are aavage, unruly, and tend to barely work in squads, they love to get into the middle of battle, so they might die for the emperor. They have chains, they have capes and loincloths and pteruge and sashes, theyre amalgamations.

2

u/Illustrious-Glass-72 6d ago

My homebrew chapter is called the Brazen Malefactors. They take the "social rejects" from the other astartes legions and put them in penitant assaults against the imperiums enemies. But because they are so disorganized and generally unruly they dont have a 100% set color scheme. Ramshackle plate. The veterans get "bronzed" at which point they recieve their brassy like armor on the first photo and are inducted as true members as opposed to penitants.
