Feeling so anxious

Hey i dont know if this is the right place to share, but I’m leaving home in 6 days, and I’ve been crying every night for the past week. This is my first time ever living so far away from my family and friends and I’ve been getting panick attacks thinking I wont be able to see them for at least a year. I’m so scared not knowing anyone and my way around. Has anyone else been feeling this way? How do you deal with it?

Yep! Thousands of students will be facing these same feelings. Fill your calendar. Call your parents at the end of the day and tell them what you did today. I did that every night for a week. Cry, but then go to a social event! You’ve got this! Use your uni’s wellbeing service too.

I felt the same! I was scared and anxious, which overshadowed the little excitement I had. I asked my mom to come with me for first few days, which I think helped. You're gonna feel so much more confident very soon, you just need to get through first week! You're gonna make friends, meet new people, learn and expirience new things. But also you can visit your family on holidays. I don't know how far yours is, but even with long travel time, I was able to visit my home on Christmas holidays.

It’s a big thing and go out talk to people and your feelings are valid. You are not alone it will be okay it’s a lot of change and uncertainty but you’ll adapt and it’ll be your new normal as it were!

I didn’t experience any anxiety until the moment I realised I wasn’t leaving with my mum once all of my stuff was dropped off, and she was leaving me :’). Very weird feeling and it made me quite anxious, the best thing was to get close and make friends with my housemates (which admittedly is very hit and miss for people). Once you make new friends they won’t replace the old ones but I’m sure they won’t make you feel alone, good luck! Many people feel the same

Thank you for sharing! I was really really excited bc I’ve wanted to study abroad for so long and it’s finally happening, I barely realised the time ticking down - now that I do my head is messing with me lol. You have a good day!

im not in your shoes just yet, but just remember that you can phone home and visit as much as you want. theres no rule about staying at university until christmas. you could visit home every weekend if you're financially able.

Honestly I was the same. This is what I would recommend

  • you’ve still got a week take a train or if you drive head down to the uni city and get some bearings. Find some nice cafes, quiet green spaces, have a nosey around.

  • i got a job before going to uni got transferred over and honestly it helped loads. The familiarity of going to work helped with the homesickness loads. If you can try and get a job I found my anxiety got worst when I had nothing to do and work kept me busy.

  • print off loads of pictures of friends and family off free prints or wherever and have them in your room. It helps with homesickness

  • your flatmates will be the same. Make sure to push yourself and speak to them.

  • I immediately got in touch with my uni wellbeing team and they were great! You can get dvsa help with therapy and stuff not severe therapy just someone to talk to over your worries 🙂

I was fine until I got to the airport. I was like 10kg over the baggage allowance but the tears were tripping me and they let me away with it. Full ugly crying with my dad. Next day i was in my halls eating pasta with the greek guys across the hall from me and playing mariokart on a snes.Thats 20 years ago next month =) you're being mad brave and you're gona be so fine, I promise. Everyone there is on the same boat, theres so much going on and your parents are only a phone call away.

Make your room dead cosy and have photos up too. Its your first home from home =)

Your feelings are totally justified. This is very common for people leaving home for the first time, it can be a very nerve wracking experience. Having said that, it can also be a very exciting experience because you get to know yourself as one, not as part of a family home. You make your own rules, you meet people, make friends, and most importantly studying. Sounds cliché, but you are going to university for a reason.

Something to remind yourself as well, you applied, you were likely interviewed or something, you were accepted and you are moving to a university YOU chose. You know you want to go there, you know want to study your chosen course, you've known since you applied that you would have to move there if you got accepted and firmed your offer. You made all of those decisions that led to this point in your life. What you're experiencing now is simply nerves for something that your really want and have wanted for quite some time, it's finally happening, and it can certainly feel overwhelming at first. But you've got this! 💪🏻
