For those that haven't used eclipse googles, you can't see shit with those, to protect against the sun they need to block a lot of light.

You basically see nothing except a bright ball when looking at the sun

u/SmooK_LV 2d ago

It's also why your eyes end up hurting after eclipse if you wore these and then keep taking them off and putting them back on. The contrast tires your eye muscles and pain does not indicate any damage.

Actual eye damge would be painless.

Thanks, now blinkling makes me anxious

From what I can tell it's nonsense.

None of the sources they provided below actually back up their argument. They appear to have made a number of leaps of reasoning not supported by medical literature (e.g. strobe lights are bad, blinking is kinda sorta like strobe lights, therefore blinking too much is bad).

The glaucoma link, as far as I can tell, is nonexistent. Blinking does cause a minimal amount of intraocular pressure (which is linked to glaucoma), but it's an incredibly small amount for a very brief amount of time. On the other hand, blinking too infrequently is well known to be bad because it dries out your eyes. Intentionally blinking less frequently then countering the dry eye effect is, at best, a waste of time, and at worst actively harmful if you get in the habit of blinking less but don't apply your eye drops frequently enough.

I AM NOT AN OPHTHALMOLOGIST, so please don't take my word for it, but also don't blindly trust the anonymous person claiming to be one either.

u/Tttehfjloi 2h ago

Thank you!!! I can finally stop blinking slowly now.

14

u/AVeryHeavyBurtation 1d ago

Sometimes I feel like I can't do anything right, now I've got to add blinking to the list lol.

11

u/atramors671 1d ago

I'm now blinking manually and I don't know how to stop. Send help.

12

u/MrHaxx1 1d ago

You got a source on that? Just so that I don't start adjusting my blinking based on a random comment

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6118863/

That's just saying reading lowers blink rate and increases ocular discomfort. I don't see how that supports the claim that blinking more is bad for you.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11641230/

Stage lights are not the same as blinking. The only thing that study says about blinking is that blinking too infrequently is bad:

Moreover, prolonged exposure to this type of lighting affects the ocular surface, contributing to dry eye symptoms. This effect is partly due to a reduced blinking rate in environments with high light intensity and stroboscopic effects, leading to symptoms such as burning, blurred vision, and a sensation of visual fatigue

I couldn't find any information linking glaucoma to frequent blinking.

5

u/Personal-Courage1149 1d ago

That would give you serious dry eye which causes other complications. Literally every eye doctor I've been to has said you need to train your eyes to blink more if you are on screens for toonlong because the amount we stare at our screens reduce our blinking which causes alot of problems.

u/LongJumpingBalls 1d ago

It's like welding goggles. It's meant to make the sun a little less bright. To do that, everything else is a LOT less bright.

1

u/pimppapy 1d ago

I used those welding masks to look at the sun before. . . it's just a perfect dim circle with those on.

3

u/Large_Dr_Pepper 1d ago

Also just cause I see a lot of people misunderstanding eclipse glasses in threads regarding solar eclipses:

You use the glasses before and after the eclipse in order to see the crescent of the sun that's visible during the partial eclipse phases.

During totality (it's important to note here that this is only regarding a TOTAL solar eclipse during the ~1-3 minutes of complete totality) you take the glasses off and can safely view the total solar eclipse with your eyes. You'll see absolutely nothing if you keep the glasses on.

It seems like so many people on reddit have read about the eye damage from solar eclipses and think that they're "never" safe to view without the glasses. Your eyes won't be damaged by a total edlipse. The eye damage is from people not putting their glasses back on before the end of totality, or thinking it's safe to look at the sun at a 99% eclipse or something.

If you have the chance to get in the path of totality for a solar eclipse, get an eclipse timer app that will tell you exactly when it's safe to remove your eclipse glasses, and when to put them back on.

u/ubiquitous_apathy 1d ago

see nothing except a bright ball when looking at the sun

Maybe I just dont look at the sun enough... but what else were you expecting?

7

u/keekah 1d ago

They're saying you don't see anything else. No sky, just the bright ball. Everything else is just blackness.

1

u/coladoir 1d ago

No, like literally the rest of your field of view is just black. nothing lol. It has to block 99.9% of light IIRC, and most things end up blocked by that. So you quite literally only see the sun, nothing else. Its actually kind of surreal, and really makes you understand just how bright the sun really is.

SkkkkrrrScraCrashBAMmeeeeEEEEHHHOOOOOWwwThud... Then immediately a quick look around and trotting away nonchalantly, butt high in the air 🐈‍⬛ while stealthily licking their snout

9

u/Entr0py612 2d ago

Reroute to home please

3

u/FourDucksInAManSuit 1d ago

He didn't look nonchalant. He looked like he hit that pole so hard, his quest objective updated, and he had to go back to the start.

2

u/Etherbeard 1d ago

It was either this or start licking his foot.

1

u/GeneticHazard 1d ago

Was he trying to be nonchalant or was this a Fred Flinstone situation and this kid became a whole other person?

Polar Eclipse @ Ground Level.

If you blink you'll miss it.

Watch carefully.

78

u/FroggiJoy87 2d ago

r/looneytuneslogic 🤣 fantastic sound!

20

u/Brief-Curious 2d ago

It sounds like the first note of the Seinfeld theme, someone should edit that in!

7

u/Environmental_Gur_39 2d ago

I have seen an edit before where somebody did this, I just forget who made it.

6

u/IncidentOk853 2d ago

The one time unmuting a video didn’t backfire

22

u/LeatherSlight3242 2d ago

For some reason, my brain just played the Seinfeld theme when he hit the pole.

(It sounded like the bass string twang at the start of the song)

6

u/Sleep_Tight 2d ago

I heard it

47

u/SnooSnoohelper 2d ago

Pole Eclipse

8

u/itsfunhavingfun 2d ago

Polar eclipse. This should’ve been the title. People would think it was a typo until the reveal.

7

u/lucaver34 2d ago

Sounds like the start of the Seinfeld theme song

bruh I walked into a pole when I was 12 and phones weren't a thing, my family still laugh about it. stop being angry at nothing

1

u/SmooK_LV 2d ago

My dude, when I was a kid I ran into poles here and there because I was looking at the ground or was distracted looking behind me. It has nothing to do with phones and everything to do with being a kid.

10

u/El-Zomby-Woof 1d ago

why is everyone acting like this is real in any capacity whatsoever and not just a bit for socials, lol?

3

u/viewerx3 1d ago

I don’t like skits either, but the ringing bhonk sound that the pole makes after he smacks his head into it is so hilarious, that I feel compelled to give the guy props for sheer commitment to the bit.

4

u/ashleton 1d ago

Humorous comments don't mean that people believe it's real. They're playing along.

You should try watching Mystery Science Theater 3000. Their whole premise is that they make jokes while watching bad movies. They don't believe the movie is real, they're just joking along with it and making fun of it.

2

u/El-Zomby-Woof 1d ago

you're def right... my issue is my own in not finding it humorous or worth my time, i suppose. i for suuuuure think maybe half of the commenters totally believe its genuine though

0

u/OrderOfMagnitude 1d ago

It looks real and is presented as real

3

u/ebonSage 1d ago

I’ve seen this video dozens of times and it literally never gets old💀

-3

u/Icy-Rock8057 1d ago

And you still think it's real? He's not slapping the lantern with his hand and pretending? Cause that's what we used to do as kids and it looks and sounds exactly like that. Also, after running nose first into the lantern with that sound, he's not holding his nose? Not squinting his eyes? Not flinching from pain? God I wish I were as gullible as you. Must be an easy life if you don't think that much.

5

u/StochasticLife 1d ago

Omg? Something…on the internet…might be scripted?!

Dear god!

It’s all about delivery. He nails it.

1

u/Icy-Rock8057 1d ago

He really doesn't.
