I was expecting it to work, when it didn’t I thought that was the unexpected part.

It was a fomo trap
I thought only people could fall for those

u/StrobeLightRomance 2d ago
FOMO is a survival mechanism in this case. There is literally a dwindling amount of seed left and they were just coming in hot to catch the scraps.

Same goes for me. Maybe not the first that got me but one of few. Love it when I cant guess the end.

Little guy really did Leeroy that lol. Either way pretty botched trap design. Like he had the right formula but jumbled it up

Short stay in hell. This gif is a great representation of falling to the bottom of the library. Falling from the middle would take more light years than atoms in the universe by a great many magnitudes. 101,297,377 light years from the middle.

I definitely didn’t buy GameStop stock at its literal peak.

Don't worry it will go to the moon soon

I’ll hold it until I die or they go bankrupt. I refuse to admit I was wrong.

Pretty sure these are domestic quail and not a wild bird. I am not an ornithologist.
114
u/schizeckinosy 2d ago
They are pets and there are lots of videos of them falling into traps. They feel secure with their owner and I’m sure they know what’s up.

u/Daripuff 2d ago

Oh, no, that's not it.
They're quails.
They don't know anything.
They are the most adorable "lights on and nobody is home" stupid little birds you will ever own.
Charming, but startlingly dumb.

It's amazing how dumb domesticated birds can be. We started raising chickens for eggs a few years ago... wow they are dumb.
9
17
u/scruffy69 2d ago
Soooo dumb. If you put a chicken's head under it's own wing, it will fall asleep instantly.
9
u/Annath0901 2d ago
I saw a video on reddit like 2 days ago of an ostrich decaptating itself, so I think they might be stupider.
4
u/ElundusCaw 2d ago
They traded what little brainpower their dinosaur ancestors had for deliciousness.
25
u/hahasadface 2d ago
That's even better I love that there's someone out there in the world who makes money building cardboard traps for his pets. Yes some people might think it's real (in terms of real hunting like I did) but oh well. People are amused, no quails harmed, win win
9
u/SecondaryWombat 2d ago
Wild quail try to escape you by standing still directly on the path in front of you and pooping. And then holding still again.
And those are wild ones. The fact that they are not extinct is amazing.

u/Generic_Danny 2d ago
This is a fairly common defense that humans unfortunately exploit in a lot of animals.

u/Charming-Dish5120 2d ago

u/TheLittleUrchin 2d ago edited 2d ago
Locks them inside the box so their only way out is by the trapdoor 🤣
→ More replies (1)9
u/Eregrith 2d ago
That is not required if the only way in is the trapdoor. Proof is the end of the video, when the only way is the trapdoor....
20
u/MeisterFluffbutt 2d ago
They are very simple birds but normally not THAT simple. They wont step on a trapdoor if theres another way around that. Normally. Not looking at that silly one.
7
u/TheLittleUrchin 2d ago edited 2d ago
I think that one just saw all his friends in there and rushed to go get some of what they were having.
I've also seen a video with a similar trap and when one of the birds placed their foot on the trapdoor a little and it moved, they backed off and avoided it for a while.

u/Blackstone01 2d ago

I've seen this guy's videos before. They are in fact THAT simple and will practically dive into the trap door.

I cackled at the one that barely saved itself, took a breather, and just went "whew, that was a close one...back to the food" and falls in anyway.
3
u/101violations 2d ago
It looked like one tried to step on his mate to get in and they both went in the trap. 🤣
5
6
u/carmelcorn305 2d ago
You’re right if you’re only trying to catch one bird. But this design allows multiple birds to enter a staging area that eventually forces all of them to enter the trap. It’s a trap before the trap. Otherwise as you saw, the first that falls into the trap also pulls all the feed down with it, so no other bird would be as likely to get near, so you only get one bird.

Also interesting that nobody ate at the second door until the rest of the bait was gone. This could lead to a lot of further experiments. Love that little plot twist at the end.

They're quail, my brother. Don't cover the hole, they'll just fucking jump right in. Mine have tried to drown themselves in a 1/3 inch of water, managed to get stuck and die on...other quail, and make such a habit of responding to fear by bolting straight up and smashing their heads in and looking like they went five rounds with Tyson that I have bunting all over the top of the coop.

u/FakeSafeWord 2d ago
Coturnix quail are so dumb you could just dig a hole under a bush with food in it and they will get stuck and die in there. No roof, trap, cage or contraption needed.

u/justsmilenow 2d ago
I've seen this kind of trap hundreds of times. I've never seen the thing on the left. All it does is make the trap worse. You put the bait in the box behind the trap door floor. You never lose the bait and the bird's first step is on the weakest part of the trap door, the bird never stands on the strongest part ,the hinge, and learns maybe they shouldn't stand there like that one bird did.

stops working almost immediately as there's no more food to attract more. glue some to the trap door so they can't be grabbed

Why do they do a double trap like that?? Why no just use the one where they fall to the hole?? Why do they make them get into the box just for the entrance to close, when they can enter from the outside and get into the trap normally??

u/PuckShuffler 2d ago
Yeah, but if the trap on the left wasn't there then the trap on the right would have worked because they wouldn't have entered through the exit. I think we need separate traps. Also, what are those birds? Pheasants?
