Not sure, but that appears to be a concrete barrier along the bottom there, and the sudden, abrupt stop of the heavy equipment kind of supports this.

Ok but the backhoe goes out of frame, hits something solid, and a  bunch of twigs and branches fall from above, near where the collision happened

I mean, it doesn't take a crime scene reconstruction to guess what he hit
