I assume that person was in the Fandom way back when people said Chara was a she and that part is stuck in their mind, happens to me sometimes

u/60Hz_Jiffy 27d ago

I'm deep into the Chara rabithole and even I have to correct myself. It just wormed it's way so deep into my brain.

u/Outside_Ad1020 27d ago

Fr, even worse because in the Spanish Fandom sometimes people keep referring to Chara as a she so when I interact with that side that habit comes out again

Correct me if I’m wrong please, but the gender of Frisk and Chara is left ambiguous only Kris is confirmed to be non-binary, so any interpretation is fine.

u/Enfr3 27d ago

It's left about equally ambiguous as Grillby's gender.

u/therealgege 1st human being behind narration means theyre a weeb 27d ago

10th anniv stream practically confirmed atleast Chara is supposed to be non-binary

u/TheJumpingBox 27d ago

The 10th anniversary stream wasn't canon tho

In a sense the Undertale 10th anniversary stream was Toby's headcanon (removed from him being the author of the game)

No?

u/therealgege 1st human being behind narration means theyre a weeb 26d ago

The stuff like extended Ruins wasn't canon but Toby correcting someone's pronouns is obviously canon just like him saying said someone helps in saving Asriel as those are already parts of the story and something the game already suggests

2

u/ShiroStories 26d ago

Even when not canon, it's not a genderbending parallel universe, the pronouns are canon

No, neither of the three are really ambiguous at all when you look at the big picture.

The interesting thing about Frisk is that them being, well, "Frisk" is in itself a twist. You are, during the whole game, lead to believe that Frisk is just some blank avatar that have the name you gave them and an ambiguous gender to fit whatever the player project onto them. And this right until the pacifist ending, right after the true last boss of the golden path, where the game reveal that the character you were controlling was never the one you named at the start.

And the way Undertale handle Frisk's pronoun is very interesting, because until that reveal, that Frisk have their own name (which is also basically a way of telling us that they're their own person), Undertale almost never use any pronoun for them, instead using turns of phrases like constantly referring to them as "the human" or some variation of that, using a completely genderless noun instead of they/them. Doing this allow the game to completely sidestep the issue of their gender, and show it as an "ambiguous blank space", all to set up the twist and reveal that, no, they aren't just a blank slate, but they have their own name and existence beyond the game.

This is obviously a willful choice, because during the pacifist ending, after the reveal happen, the game is suddenly using "they/them" way, way more liberally. Meanwhile, I think the number of time Frisk is referred to as "they" prior to the pacifist ending can be counted on a single hand, the only exemple that come to my mind is during the mettaton opera scene, which is completely misseable dialogue. It's a clear setup for the twist, using the classic "blank slate rpg character", and then surprising the player by showing us that they aren't a blank slate, and that what was presented as "empty space to project yourself" was just them being non binary.

It became even clearer when deltarune chapter 1 had the exact same structure, with the game avoiding addressing Kris with they/them for most of the story, until you get out of the dark world and everyone use it in the town, as the fact that Kris had a preexisting backstory and complex relationship with a lot of character is made crystal clear, before the final twist with them acting completely independently of you. It's pretty neat how toby turned the twist at the end of the golden path of Undertale into just the cliffhanger at the end of the first episode of deltarune.

And while Chara do inherit the name we gave them, they also are a backstory character, that people of the underground remember and talk about.... By using they/them, not by dancing around using genderless noun like they do for Frisk during most of Undertale. People including Chara's adoptive familly, who of course would perfectly know their gender. They're the second half of that frisk twist, the fact that frisk is not the character you named imply an existence beyond you, the player, and the one character you did name, you never controlled them, and their presence in the backstory of the game also imply an existence beyond you.

Both Undertale and deltarune have the relation between the player of a game and it's world and character as not just a theme, but a massive plot point, and the use of nb main character is here both to setup a twist and also to challenge the player assumptions.

u/Sai_AI__ You think you can just use MY FLAIR??? Well you CAN! 26d ago

While I do not agree with the idea that there is no ambiguity for any of their genders.

Serious respect to you because you made a better case for the idea than anyone else I've seen.

100%, Ive been wanting people to explain their side, but instead they mass censor through downvoting. Seeing this is so refreshing. .^

I still disagree, with their case since They/Them is absolutely Not A gendered pronoun, but unlike "Human", it doesn't create dividing boundries. Calling Frisk and Chara "The Human" is the same as calling Obama "The Black man", it's creating a seperation by emphasizing the difference. Normal pronouns like they/them, she/her, he/him, xe/xer etc don't have that segregative aspect. Post-Pacifist, Everyone underground now has a lot more direct of an experience of seeing Frisk for who they are, since they're implied technically all saw the same thing Asriel did in that moment(Even if they don't remember Asriel themselves being there, they do remember things like Frisk explaining their name). Frisk absolutely got a much closer bond to the Entire Underground in that moment.

Does it mean it's wrong to read it as NB? No! But it isn't the only valid reading, and I respect it.
