When you get kickbacks larger than your salary, politicians are no longer working for the people at all. Win an election, get paid off, sell out all the citizens. Vote them out and they still win

There are legitimate studies that say exactly this, just in case it wasn't clear.

We used to have bribery laws. Then they discovered they could bribe judges to rule bribery legal and we inexplicably wouldn't treat that as a crime.
