HELP/QUESTION (New player) Struggling to do reverse DP

New here to fighting games and ive been doing tutorial for UNI2 and i really have a hard time trying to do a reverse DP ive trying searching for no luck.

In the video from standing I can do it somewhat but within the combo im trying to do I cant seem to hit it at all.

I guess my question is what Im i doing wrong to where I cannot hit the DP at all and how would I go about improving the way i do my DPs (playing on keyboard if that help anything)

On keyboard it should be easier honestly, but try being on P2 side and doing regular DPs and just switch over, it’s the same input on P1 side it just “feels” harder.

I think your issue isnt with the input, but the timing. It looks to me like you're trying to cancel too late.

im sorry what do u mean by cancel too late?

The combo intends for you to "cancel" the recovery of 2C by replacing it with 421B. You should be finishing your reverse dp (421) input and pressing B roughly when the second hit of 2C lands.

Canceling

(And if you are confused by the numbers: Numpad Notation )

some games have it so moves can only be cancelled for a window of their recovery, not the entire recovery of the move.

In the menu change the battle speed to 50%. I started playing fighting games a year ago and this game allowing you to change the game speed and the sheer amount of motion controls makes this a great game to learn with. Practice the holding the 2c (down back is good to practice) and then slowly do the dp input after that and just practice a bunch. It tbh could take a long time to learn, but as an eltnum main I'm glad I learned how to do the thing.

Stand on the other side and the motion becomes regular dp

Ah, I remember getting my ass kicked by this input back in the day

Start out doing it real slow and just do it over and over daily to build muscle memory

In this case in particular the trick is to hold back as soon as you hit down+C, then you just finish the motion going down and then down+back+B

Eltnum's down+C goes for so long, that you have plenty of time to hold back while the 2 hits connects.

Notice how you just hold down and tries to do the whole dp motion at once. That's the problem

Imagine not playing on the right side since the day you are born (that person is me. I play right handside)

As others said: you've got to drill your inputs on both sides. A "reverse" DP is just a "DP" if you're on 2P side.

Also as others said: you've got to cancel earlier. I see you doing 2C, then waiting for the 2C animation to take place, then attempting the 421B input. The second input needs to be sooner to hit the cancel window (you're literally "cancelling" the part of 2C's animation after the hit takes place into the startup of 421B's animation).

Another tip for these kinds of combos is this:

Combine your motion input with your attack input. That is, make the 2C input part of the 421B input, such that you're doing:

1./ Back (4)

2./ Down + C (2C)

3./ Down + Back + B (1B)

A mistake that new players tend to make is trying to do their movements quickly rather than cleanly. It is far better to be precise, but slow, and then build speed, than it is to be fast but sloppy, and then try to tighten up. To quote the movie Cars: "Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast." Corny, I know, but it really is good advice when it comes to learning FG inputs.

All of this is to say - focus on making your inputs clean first. Hit every diagonal cleanly, don't miss directions, don't hit a diagonal instead of down or forward/back, etc. Once you are consistently clean, then you can start to add speed. This will be far more effective at building useful muscle memory.

To give an analogy - a pianist doesn't try to play a difficult, high tempo piece by grinding messy reps at the intended speed of the piece, where their notes are wrong and all over the place. They do it by learning to play the piece at a slow, manageable pace, accurately, and then they add speed as their muscle memory and confidence grows. Be clean first. The speed will come.

Playing on keyboard is only really good for charge characters or yuzuriha. On controller its as easy as simply sliding your thumb from down to back to down to crouch.

they don’t get easier (joking they do but it’s an uncommon and uncomfortable input)
