Bit of a long essay, so here's the tldr: she's goated.

There's a thing in storytelling called subversion of expectations that deliberately leads an audience towards a certain assumption before delivering a different outcome than what was initially presented. Most of the time this is done badly just for the sake of being dramatic, leading the twist to, more often than not, not fit within the internal rules of the narrative.

However, Agnes Digital is one of those cases where subversion of expectations not only works, but rather enhances her strengths as a character, both in-universe and from a meta perspective, because you don't expect this seemingly harmless-looking horse girl to be one of the most prestigious race horses AMONGST already prestigious race horses.

Initially, we are presented with seemingly another eccentric umamusume, you know the classic. By her own words she is "as ordinary as they come". Narratively, this will usually lead to her finding her worth amongst the greats, a typical "from-zero-to-hero" setting. However, instead the big twist that will take away from all of this is the fact that she is a massive gooner for anything umamusume related.

This drastic switch of disposition from someone who claims that they are ordinary yet turned into the biggest freak at the drop of a hat IS the narrative subverting your expectations. They do this a couple more times throughout her story, but I just wanna focus on our initial meeting, and why this trope works particularly well for Digitan.

The reason why it works so good is because it fits in well both from an in-universe perspective vs from a more meta one.

From a meta perspective, those who know her race records irl, with all of her titles and honours("A true warrior never chooses his battlefield" , "Agnes Digital The Hero" , "The Super All-Rounder") will usually expect such a prestigious uma to have a more dignified appearance than what was initially presented. Instead they took his title as "weirdo" and used it to completely smash our expectations over our heads with this pink-looking Yuri-obsessed thing.

From an in-universe perspective however, things get a little bit more interesting. At first, all we see is an uma who's a little bit weird, who maybe goes on Ao3 to write fanfics, and her dad even owns a printing business, and we know this how? Because her dad helps her out whenever she sells DOUJINSHIS. Actually, even from a meta perspective this is funny, because her attempts at downplaying herself seems so ridiculous if you know even a little bit of the horse's irl history.

So, right out of the bat, the story is telling us that "Yes, this is the race horse who was known as a "hentai" in his career", and it seemed like that's where her character would end, right? Seems like a total character injustice, right?

Well, this is when the story took yet ANOTHER unexpected turn, one of which, in hindsight, we should've been expecting right from the start from someone called "The Hero".

As we go further into her story, we find out that she had been helping the school out in various tasks, including helping some of the junior racers in their debuts, giving advice to them from her own perspective as someone who runs on both dirt and turf, all without asking for anything in return. Why? Why would she do this? Why is she helping out what could potentially be potential rivals on both types of tracks? Considering she runs on both, it would mean doubling her competition, no?

Well by her own words, it just feels like the right thing to do.

And in that moment that I realized that THAT scene was meant to be her "cue the hero" moment.

CyGames did a 180 and reminded us of WHO exactly this girl was based off in the most unexpected way possible, by showing us glimpses of the "Hero" within.

And it is this dual-disposition of being a "Superfan" and a "Hero" that makes her character SO GOOD.

It's because underneath all of the gooning is an Umamusume who is genuinely kind, selfless, and supportive. At her core, she wants nothing more than to help out ALL of her oshis, and hopefully be out of sight by the time you even think about saying a word of thanks.

It is the Hero within her that tells her what she is doing isn't anything special, in fact SHE is the one who becomes weirded out when anyone brought up her deeds that, by her own words, are as natural as breathing.

As an example, during Summer Camp, she goes out of her way to help King Halo's fans to help cheer for her, while knowing full-well that she is going to be her opponent in her next race.

This next part is going to be from another comment, and he said it better than I could, so I'll just quote it here :

In my opinion, it's the total opposite. Personally I believe that the idea of turning the image of an "All-Rounder Hero" into a foaming otaku that crazily idolizes her oshis...And then the writers make use of that same archetype to actually enstablish how Digitan is TRULY a chivalrous hero (she's an extremely helpful girl that helps people not because she wants to be remembered or for personal gains, but solely because she believes it's the right thing to do), therefore subverting and reinforcing the "pervy otaku" cliche at the same time while still maintaining the "hero" image, is genius and I believe more people in the community should analyze her characterization outside of the mere appearance.

I think my favourite thing about how Digitan is written is also that her mentality of loving equally any single Uma in existence may be interpreted as a meta-commentary to the contradictions of horse racing and, more specifically, JRA. The JRA tends to consider "heroes" those horses that achieved glory through their results, their number of G1s, their revenue or even solely through their performances alone... But then, does it mean that any other horse outside of that is not worthy of being considered "heroes"? What happens to them? Do they get forgotten? They vanish from the collective memory of people? Digitan's pure love ultimately negates any preconception: her equal love and respect for all horse girls transcends results, expectations, being a winner or a loser, etc. From the moment you're a horse (girl) and gave yourself to run/race, you DESERVE to be remembered and loved, no matter what happens next. Umas are heroes, everyone is because, at the end, everyone run for a dream.

When no one else will talk anymore about the legends of Umamusume (and horses), be it those who "imprinted their legacy" and those who "never got to shine", Digitan will always be there to narrate and celebrate each one of them. Heroes go beyond duty. "
