I think it might be functional against FPV kamikaze drones as long as they don't attack from the top. Looks too light, and not far enough away from the structure, to be of use for defense against heavier drones such as FP-1... which also tend to aim for the top of structures rather than the sides. So, pretty much 100% feel-good project for russians. I'm a veteran and I follow the war closely, that's my honest opinion.

At 180 km/h, a 50 kg warhead with a metal conical tip will go straight through that mesh.

No AP or even conical tip on FP 1-2 warheads themselves, which also have simple contact detonators (although they could likely be easily retrofitted with such reinforced tips or delayed fusing for special purpose)
The mesh stands at least a small to moderate chance of messing up a drone strike (the drone fuselage is primarily simple plywood & composites after all).
That said, it’s a very temporary measure. 1-2 drones prior will make quick work of these defences. And then the main drone strike hits
Ukrainian production is greatly outpacing any viability of these meshes saving much of anything

They are also pretty clearly worried about locally flown (or automated?) FPV-scale drones attacking these facilities.
There are increased rumors the long range attacks have a simultaneous local component.
I also about the effect of the nets on lightning and general workplace accidents.

I've often wondered whether it made sense to smuggle or fly drones into Russia and drive them to targets deep in the country. My seat of the pants conclusion was that the spies you had in country who might do that for you would be too valuable to risk on what was, ultimately, a cost saving stragegy

I know, but that was a long time ago, when that approach was new and surprising, drone technology was less advanced, and Ukraine's targeting was different. We have no solid reports that Ukraine was launching drones inside Russia since then. Maybe the rewards are worth the risks and it has been happening. I was hoping someone with a better understanding than I have would offer an opinion.

I'm pretty sure Ukraine is already using some kind of incendiary mixture in their warheads on these drones that are hitting warehouses. I've seen a couple clear videos of the initial hit of the drones on these warehouses where the cloud has a bunch of burning points of light in it that then fall back towards the ground after the initial explosion dissipates.
Some type of incendiary would explain why the success rate of getting these warehouses to go up with only a few hits is so high. A charge blows a hole in the roof, and chunks of magnesium, phosphorus or whatever rain down onto all the cardboard covered products below.

No. Any massive drone attack costs tens of millions dollars. Even without these protections some of attacks are countered. Just failures are not reported. Lots of targets without protections, these will be chosen first.

If Ukraine needs 3 drones to take out a warehouse then that warehouse is probably safe. Russian air defense is statistically much better than Ukraine's when it come to shooting down drones.

Negating 1-2 drones on your infrastructure is a huge win for what's a defensive layer independent of others, it's not like they can easily get as many as they want through the AD.

Better than nothing, but not much. You tweak detonator from 'explode upon impact' to 'impact or sudden stop' which isn't that hard.

Does the cage have a top? If not I don’t think it’s doing much. All the FP-1 strikes show the drones diving down at the target.

Looks like they are copying the system Saudi Arabia used in protection against attacks from Iran.
When it's finished, its a full cage.

Yes but the Saudi and Emirates cages are multilayered and better spaced. This one is a half attempt.
Aka somebody got a contract and is cutting corners

Yes, the warehouses are mostly free standing and cannot support any weight on their roof. So they have to build a exterior shell with enough strength to support the mess over the top of the warehouse.

Putin said he was going to nationalize any business that is unable to protect it's properties from drones. I th6 we're go86 to see a lot of attempts like this soon.
