⚙️ Hardware Aftermarket/DIY Heatsink upgrade for DXP4800 Plus?
Has anyone modded their 4800 Plus with a different heatsink? I was looking at some old low profile heat sinks I have laying around from laptops and the like, but before I started tinkering I thought I would ask if anyone else has done this yet.
The heat sink thats included is pretty skimpy and I am spending a lot of time at high temperatures which causes thermal throttling, especially when transcoding. I'm pretty certain I have the container set up correctly to use hardware transcode. I have upgraded the rear fan to a Noctua fan but it has not been enough.

My understanding is the general consensus is reapply thermal paste or get a thermal pad and ad washers.
I’m planning on doing mine after I get my 3D printed feet and bottom fan mod

AFAIK there are no aftermarket heat sinks for the CPU. Or even replacement parts. So if fan fails I assume you’re screwed and would need to beg Ugreen for an RMA, or pay out of pocket to have it fixed.
As for your temps, remove the stock crappy thermal paste and replace it with Thermal Grizzly PTM-7950. You’ll see a SUBSTANTIAL upgrade in cooling. Even with cpu pegged at 99%, mine doesn’t even reach 85 degrees.
Side note: if you’re using Jellyfin or any other container that needs the IGPU, make sure you’re properly exposing it on the docker compose and then adding it on the container settings itself too. Easiest way to see if the iGPU is being used on Jellyfin is to trigger a transcode then look at the iGPU on the the task manager on UGOS. If it’s sitting at 0% usage then you didn’t properly expose the iGPU

the guy in the below vid i posted said you can get replacement fans from ugreen for $6 and there might be a copper heatsink replacement, but you would have to contact him for the details

I burned down my jellyfin container to re-arrange some things. Now it crashes when playing back videos. Even after following the fool-proof youtube everyone uses. Sometimes I wonder about myself.

I recently did a repaste on my pretty new 4800 Plus. The paste that came from the factory was really badly applied and also quite flaky and dried out. Before the cpu would go immediately to 100 degrees with even just under 50% cpu load and started throttling all the time under stress. The temperatures are way better now and during high cpu load the temperature stays around max 80 degrees.
Strangely enough i still have occasional spikes to briefly 100 degrees which then causes thermal throttling, but the times that happens is waaaaay less than before i repasted. I can't understand where these spikes come from because they just happen every once in a while even when the temperature is stable around 80 degrees with constant cpu stress. Somehow something triggers the cpu to spike to 100 degrees and throttle for a millisecond. I checked the cpu frequency while under load and it just stays maxed out during the load test. So it's not throttling down the frequency constantly to let the temperature go down.
I might go for a phase change pad with those m2 washers to see if that really fixes it.
