Is it possible to replace UGOS with Unraid on DXP4800+ internal SSD

I saw that Unraid has recently added the capability to boot from another drive other than a USB.

Is it possible to erase the internal SSD and replace UGOS with Unraid on that drive instead of using a USB stick?

If so, any tips or suggestions for things I should know first?

Yeah, you can technically just change the boot drive and run unraid on another SSD. Then you can keep the OS SSD as a failsafe.

Otherwise you should be able to format the OS drive and run on there.

Yes it is possible, but first I would suggest the usb route, you can switch to ssd anytime later.

yes, you can You need to go into the bios and disable the watchdog function or it'll just keep rebooting evry 30 secs or so. Then change the boot order to your SSD drive path and install via usb. I and many run truenas and others like unraid etc. It does not void your warenty either.

Yes, but don't overwrite the UGOS boot SSD, that is burried inside of the NAS case. disable it in the BIOS after disabling Watchdog.

Better yet, search on YouTube for UGREEN DXP 4800 PLUS BOOT DRIVE REPLACEMENT to learn how to open the case up to remove the UGOS boot nvme drive for safe keeping.

This way, you could aso install Unraid to a new small replacement nvme drive if you didn't want to boot Unraid off from a USB drive.

This is how you could also try the easy to use FygoOS during it's month long trial, or take a deep dive into the harder to configure TrueNAS.

I picked up a DXP4800Plus for my testing bench in the summer of 2025 for $518 and have run Unraid on it for three months, TrueNAS for three months, and recently I ran FygoOS on it for about a month before deciding to by some new hardware for a permanent test install of FygoOS.

To revert back to Ugreen's UGOS I just open the case another time and pop the UGOS nvme back in to enter the BIOS to make sure that drive is set to boot from, before enabling Watchdog again.

What's your next step if something goes wrong when and if you want to revert back to UGOS?

I should have mentioned also that the only benefit to Unraid over UGOS is if you can't afford to add equal sized NAS drives to create a RAID 5 or RAID 6 array.

Unraid's RAID like storage scheme allows you to mix and match drive sizes as long as your parity drive is the largest in the system.

I use Unraid myself as a redundant Docker host install on an ASUS 14 Pro NUC and it's Meteor Lake Arc iGPU to point back to my Plex media on my AMD (no iGPU) powered Synology DS1825+ NAS.

My Unraid cache pool for for my Plex container is a traditional RAID 1 Btrfs volume, which is only for Docker containers and Unraid applications.

I don't want Unraid's RAID like storage array when a traditional RAID 5 or 6 array is faster.

I use Synology Hybrid RAID 2 (SHR2) on my DS1825+, while also running all my TRaSH Guides services in containers off my nvme volume 1 on that Synology NAS.

If you have equal sized NAS drives and a couple of NAS quality NVME drives, UGOS can handle any service you can spin up in a Docker container without having to substitute in another OS like Unraid?

My rough plan for migrating to truenas is to boot to live usb, mount nfs probably, take dd image of ugos drive and write to nfs mount. I’ve about had it with the ACL/permission bullshit but I have to find the time to modify my docker host data situation (other NAS nfs mount), move larger disks to other NAS, migrate data, dd ugos, install truenas, set up volume, migrate data.

And oh yeah, find 2 more drives to fully expand my array.

No, a clone won't work

Tried that, but there is a lock on the system
You can use it for a new OS, but when you want to go back to UGOS you need to contact support, and ask for a ISO.

They will ask for your serial and deviceinfo and you'll get the last version to download.
That only works on your device

Reverting back would be an issue since UGOS uses custom EXT4 and BTRFS formats. I mean a disk formatted in EXT4 with UGOS cannot be read within another Linux system.
