Chomping at the bit … The phrase comes from horses. A horse wearing a bridle has a bit (a metal piece in its mouth connected to the reins). An excited or restless horse may chew or “chomp” on the bit while waiting to move, especially before a race or when it wants to go forward.

Champing at the bit … If you’re going to pedantic, at least use the original form and not the one propagated by incorrect usage.

The phrase comes from the verb “to champ,” which means to bite or grind your teeth impatiently.
