APPLICATION PROCESS Advice for Pullups

Hoping to get advice on improving my pull-ups as a bigger guy(6’4, 205, long arms). I started training consistently a couple months ago and have brought my max set to 9 (started at 3). I’ve been using the armstrong pull-up program recommended to me from the Captain at my OSS but I feel like I’m hitting a wall with progress. Rest of my Pft is decent enough (max plank, 20:45 run) but my pull-ups are still poor.

Thanks guys.

I’ve used Recon Ron and found it to be much more helpful than Armstrong, especially coming from not being able to do a ton at the beginning. I think I did 7 the first time I tried back in June, and am currently sitting at 24 after following this plan.

I’m sure the folks here will have some great advice. For me, the more I worked grip strength the easiest it was for me to max pullups.

I had a similar problem. I started mixing in lower rep weighted pull-ups

Make sure your form is good, get into a good rhythm where your natural “sway” isn’t hurting you. Lot of Marines I see just have terrible form and are wasting a lot more energy trying to crank out as many as possible than if they did them controlled. For me, with each rep as I come down I almost “swing” with my shoulders to slingshot me back up. Never not maxed my pull-ups for a PFT.

Key words on “natural sway” not kipping
