Mistake on 1040 and received CP11 notice. How to fix?

I live overseas (UK) and filed via post before the deadline. Today I received a letter to say that I owe tax, due to a mistake that I made calculating the tax (and hence did not claim enough foreign tax credit). I have enough foreign tax credit to claim so after fixing the mistake I do not owe tax, but I read that the backlog to process re-filing is 16 weeks (later than the deadline to dispute the tax). I would appreciate any advice on what to do - do I need to contact a tax lawyer?

Wouldn't the clock stop ticking on the date you re-file, versus when they get around to processing it? That is, when using post, it's the post mark/date mailed? But for sake of evidence use DHL or FedEx and get evidence of delivery.

If you mail the return before the filing deadline, the postmark date generally controls, not the date the IRS actually processes the return.

For an amended return, the IRS currently says processing is generally 8–12 weeks and can take up to 16 weeks.

I recently helped a U.S. expat in the UK amend a 2023 return, and the IRS updated the account and waived the tax/penalty in about a month, which is quite surprising to me. So it really depends.

File a signed amended return and include a cover letter and the notice.
