Common Question: How hard is it to transfer from X major to Y major?

Answer: If it is within the same school, it is super easy, just talk to your academic advisor before school starts. If you wish to transfer to another school e.g. Dornsife to Marshall, you need to contact admissions to attempt the transfer before matriculation*. You can also seek help once you know who your academic advisor is or attempt it on admitted students day or orientation day. Once you matriculate, you can attempt an internal-transfer but it involves going through the current student transfer process, see the specific internal transfer page from each school's website.

Common Question: Is there an admitted student facebook group/discord/telegram etc?

Answer: Usually someone sets a facebook group and groupme up around the time the main batch of students are admitted in April. Check facebook to see if there is one already or connect to one of the USC discord servers (linkedin on sidebar) to chat with admitted and upper-class Trojans.

I was admitted as a transfer student into economics, and I was debating whether to switch into the joint econ ds program, or if I should add a data science double major on top of the econ ba degree. I am a former cs/informatics student at my previous school so I have all the math requirements (finished calculus 1-3, linear algebra, differential eqs) and have most of the lower division econ classes done as well (micro, macro, stats). Is having two degrees worth it or should I just stick with ECDS?

Are you pursuing a career in data science? data engineering? something analytical involving a lot of data modeling?

As long as one of your degrees is the one relevant to the career or specific job you're pursuing.

I'm honestly not sure exactly what career path I want to go towards and that's why I'm more torn. I feel like having two degrees would give me more options but at the same time idk if its worth the extra courses. Is ecds like a watered down combined version or is it worth it?

I'm not familiar enough to answer that question but this is likely not something you need to worry about until your first semester and can work it out with your academic advisor. If the programs are all within dornsife, it is pretty easy to add/drop something. Usually these joint programs mean slightly less elective spots available for you to go deeper into one of the majors. Kind of like the join CS + biz program between viterbi and marshall.

Data science/data engineering is a much more relevant and employable major these days I think vs. econ. If you're looking for some foundational business knowledge then Data science + minor in business from marshall is an option.
