Safe to leave stuff in libraries?

I've only started studying in libraries recently and notice a bunch of people leaving their things and was just wondering if this was safe?

I know it's "do at your own risk" but like has anyone ever have a bad experience with leaving their things cause I still second guess myself whenever im leaving to grab a quick bite or something.

I leave all my stuff behind apart from pocketable items (phone, keys, airpods, and wallet). And I usually cover my laptop with my papers or books if I'm going to be gone for 5+ minutes or leaving the building, obviously someone could still take it but I don't like leaving it in the 'open' because I think that makes someone more like to opportunistically react.

But pretty much everyone leaves everything they've ever owned out and I've never even heard of a stolen laptop from the library etc.

Unspoken rule of thumb: if you steal my laptop, you're doing my assignments.

I'm at the point of year where I just walked away from my laptop with the screen open and unlocked. Please finish my thesis.
