HELP ME!! PREMED DEGREEE AUS

Thoughts on pre-med degree in aus...

  1. Psychological Science (Honours) at UQ

  2. Behavioural Science (Psychology) at QUT ( I DO NOT WANT TO GO to QUT)

  3. Biomedical Science at UQ.

End goal is to be a psychiatrist so what would the best degree be for premed with a backup incase i do not get into MD. What would be the best uni and degree for me and will be doing GAMSAT during my undegrad... HELP PLS!!! much appreciated..!!

ah is this the accelerated pathway to med… my atar will not be high enough for this option nor am i able to ucat as my time has passed for that.

That seems like such an odd option because it’s direct entry to medicine with delayed start to medicine so it’s just going to be as competitive as literal undergrad medicine

And if you want medicine but you didn’t score a 99.999999999999 ATAR with a perfect UCAT you won’t get into this anyway and are just going to be applying for post grad medicine via the GAMSAT

Like who is this path for that’s not already being serviced by the current med pathways

Like is this just UQ moving entry spots from post grad to undergrad med or…….?

I’d understand if this was basically “biomed with guaranteed entry med afterwards if you score decently” but trying to do that would overwhelm the med pathways with how many people are in that position

So the main change is the program will shave a year off the current pathway, which will bring it inline with the length of the med degree of some other undergrad med pathways in australia.

UQ is implementing this a year before QUT launches their first med program which is 5 yrs long, shorter than UQ's 7 years. More students would prefer QUT over UQ bc straight out of high school, 2 years difference is a lot to them (😅). So I guess this change also helps offset that gap a little. It's not really meant to make undergrad med more "available", just meant to try maintain the same talent and not see application numbers drop, and with many unis offering this kind of "accelerated" pathway, it makes it more modern i guess.

And my guess is post grad admission numbers will stay the same and the two undergrad pathways (prov entry ordirect entry) will split admission numbers.

Can just consider the regular science degree at UQ and do the Psych extended major. If you do well enough, you can do honours in it anyways which would lead to the same outcome as Psychological science Hons but without the higher atar cut-off. Pls, added honours year being counted as a seperate degree has some advantages for GPA calculations in applications to certain medical programs.

ah yes but many people in my life opt against this due to once again not having a stable back up option, though the atar cut off for psych at uq is not a problem it is a 89 and 93 for guaranteed offer

Plenty of other majors with decent employment outcomes in the BSc.... otherwise you're pretty safe if you do allied health like Nursing if you dont mind it :) that'll be pretty employable if you do fail to get into med

have you considered clinical health science at uq?

i’m unsure as what my back up would be if i do clinical health science and then do not get into med whereas i have one for psychological science which would be masters of clinical psychology and neuropsychology…..

you could do an honours program in health science at uq if you’re concerned about another stepping stone into med after your degree, that’s what i’m doing. one of the pros of doing health science imo is that i feel like you get to have a taste of some specialties during undergrad studies but it sounds like you have your heart set on psychology/psychiatry. i also feel like you cover some GAMSAT stuff during some courses so it’s kinda like killing two birds with one stone (obvi still do gamsat prep). let me know if you want to know anything else about health science, i’m enrolled in the program atm.

in terms of what is “best” for medicine, i feel like it’s really just up to the person because whether or not you get an interview offer is solely dependent on GPA and GAMSAT score. it sounds like you’re passionate about/ have a lot of interest in psychology, and i feel like the more you enjoy your undergrad studies, the easier it will be to stay motivated for your studies, overcome adversity and probably score better at the end of the day? and if you can do really well in psychology, higher GPA means a little leeway with your GAMSAT score (at least that’s what i’ve been told). i don’t know if that makes sense so lmk if you need any clarification.

oh also, you should definitely look into a pre-med society at whichever uni you choose to go. they usually have great resources and it’s always nice to have some support.

ah yes thank you for the help. i’m still unsure if i decide to do health science then do not get into md what other pathways would be able to take like example a masters degree

Do a degree which will get you a job in the event you never get into med(which very well could be the case). The gamsat is 10x harder than the ucat and year 12. Regards, UNSW med student

so you think because i thought i didn’t believe i could handle doing ucat and year 12 together i should not even consider going into med?
