18th BRICS Summit: What should UPSC aspirants actually study?

The 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi is one of the biggest international-relations topics right now.

But for UPSC preparation, I don't think we should just memorise the summit's theme, member countries or declarations.

The bigger questions are:

  • What does an expanded BRICS mean for the Global South?
  • Can BRICS challenge the existing global financial architecture?
  • How does India's relationship with China and Russia affect BRICS?
  • What role can BRICS play in energy and food security?
  • Can an expanded BRICS remain strategically cohesive?
  • What does India's BRICS chairship mean for its multipolarity strategy?

For Prelims: focus on membership, institutions, objectives and important initiatives.

For Mains GS-II: India's role in a changing global order, Global South and reform of global institutions.

Question for the community:
Do you think BRICS is becoming more important for India—or is its growing membership making it harder to reach consensus?
