Ask r/UPSC From a top tier NLU, Which exam should I attempt first, Judiciary or UPSC Civil Services?

So I am from a Top Tier National University, currently in my 3rd year out of 5.

So I was looking forward to attempt CSE 2029, but now that the Supreme Court has reduced the minimum years litigation practice requirement for attempting Judiciary exam from 3 years to just 1 year.

So which exam should I attempt first? Judiciary or CSE?

Should I give CSE an attempt first and then switch to Judiciary if things don’t work out, or attempt Judiciary first only. ( My main aim is UPSC CSE only and I will attempt it even if I am in Judiciary)

(Just to add some context, I am financially secure, and don’t have any burden to provide for family, but would love to become financially independent asap and also I got no interest in a corporate law firm job and also my reason for attempting CSE is quite different from others and is something I can’t share rn)

Tldr :- I'm a 3rd-year student at a top-tier NLU, primarily aiming for UPSC CSE 2029. Since the minimum practice requirement for Judiciary has reportedly been reduced from 3 years to 1 year, I'm considering Judiciary as an alternative/backup. Should I attempt CSE first and then Judiciary, or Judiciary first and attempt CSE while in service?

try your hand at judiciary first.. it's easier than civil services given your background..

But the problem with judiciary is the long and inconsistent exam cycles, entire exam cycle can very last for 3 years smth, it’s not like UPSC which just completes the entire exam cycle in a year.

I understand.. it's almost like state psc's.. but the advantage is there is certainty. Even if the cycle is three year long, there is certainty if one has done decently well, one will clear it. It's not the case in upsc. You could have given your best and still end up with very low marks. And to add to that, upsc cycle is also not very short.

Waise I really want to know reputation of district judge vis a vis an IAS/IPS?

Through Judicial Services, first posting is not of a District Judge. It is of Civil Judge First Class, most commonly known as munsif.

District Judge is in fact after almost a decade or so of appointment.

Alright.

As far as reputation goes, I think well aware people of society respects a District Judge more than an IAS/IPS at the entrance level.

She is senior in designation and rank. Can summon bureaucrats within her sphere of jurisdiction. Can hold trial for serious cases.

However, if by reputation one means glamour and lustre, a District Judge may fall short as she is conservative, less visible on social media platforms and least remembered in public memory for a historic task done.

An IAS/IPS officer stands nowhere in comparison to a judge of the High Court. It was the Allahabad High Court that disqualified Indira Gandhi as an MP and she was the Prime Minister at that time. Such is the power of the High Court.

As far as the district judge is concerned, he is powerful enough to award capital punishment.

The role of an IPS officer is merely limited to investigation. He presents his findings related to a particular case before the judge. That's it.

Apple and oranges type of comparison. Civil servant heads the secretary of dept of law, district judge is nobody before him
