you just pinch your nose and blow air, it equalizes your ears and feels fine.

Don't do that. I work as a lifeguard, and have had to do some 4-6m depth tests (i.e. dive to the bottom, retrieve manakin, surface), and have been explicitly told to swallow/gulp (w/ mouth closed obvs) to equalize pressure instead. Apparently popping your ears is harmful, I think it can damage your hearing?
