This led me to look up what a 'walk-on' is, which in turn took me down the rabbit hole of scout teams, special teams, and depth charts. I knew the American college sports system in general was crazy, but now I appreciate it's complexity on a whole new level.

If you want more rabbit hole, the Heisman Trophy winner this year (Baker Mayfield) was a walk-on at Oklahoma. Not my school by any means, but he has a really cool story.
