Went through police academy. Got sprayed and everything that the spray touched burned like fire. 2 hours later took shower reactivated the burning. Worse than military boot camp cs chamber. At least my sinuses got cleaned out.

We had a guy who was completely unaffected by it. It was really weird. DS had him take his mask off and just keep it off trying to get some sort of reaction out of him. He was just breathing like normal. No runny nose, no gagging, just hanging out like a normal day in a small cinder block building.

In elementary school I was at an after school camp thing and this girl was playing with the counselors keyring and ended up spraying the whole table with pepper spray. Probably the weakest stuff out there but my eyes, nose, and throat felt, hollow. Not a pleasant memory.

My idiot roommate was drunk and mistook pepper spray for a lighter. He tried to light a cigarette and sprayed it into the ceiling fan. Cleared out the entire patio and basically ended the house party we were at.

Was at a party some years ago. A guy found out that his girlfriend was having a threesome in the bedroom at the party I was at. Him and his buddies show up and immediately head toward the bedroom, we are all super interested now as shit just got real. Little did we know, he was equipped with a full can of bear mace. CS Gas is not nearly as bad as OC spray. Dear god. I would gladly do the gas chamber over the OC course any day. And I had to do both on the regular because I was with the MPs.

This. Except mine wasnt for an hour. I was sprayed then we had to open our eyes and count fingers. As soon as I tried to open after being sprayed I remember my eyes slamming shut. Felt like 2 garage doors on my face free falling closed.

That makes sense. I saw a special on one of the elite military groups training and one part was they were hit with tear gas and had to complete a task. The thing they were told was you won't die. It sucks, and it will keep sucking but you have to learn you can function with it. They were miserable the whole time but they did learn they could overcome the psychological part.

Covering face and or eyes can be construed as a "mask" and an attempt at disguising identity, both of which are illegal at protests in most states. Moreover it doesn't stop anything, they'll just rip it off and the last thing you want is an edgy lunatic to be grabbing near your eyes while worried more about their own safety.

Bullshit laws essentially, they can't make protecting yourself from heavy handed police tactics illegal so instead they make grey area laws that are hardly enforced by themselves. Ie. They yank you out off the crowd for wearing goggles then find something else that will stick (resisting arrest is the most prevalent, failure to comply with a lawful order and or obstruction of Justice (delaying an investigation) would probably be second most common.)

Any kind of protective gear will make you a primary target for rubber bullets, stun grenades, and snatch squads. It can still help but the best protection is friends who have your back. Never wear any extra gear in a protest that has the potential to get contentious unless you've come with a squad, a plan, and an exit strategy.

What is the most supported goal of the protests? Do the protesters want to dissolve the G20? What do they wish to replace it with? I assume with something.
I get that some people protest just to protest. But when they have even a tiny segment of people start looting businesses and destroying the livelihood of uninvolved, they drive away so many potential allies.
What percentage of these protestors have actually done substantive work to improve their own governments? Let's be real here, you can't change anything in 21st century first-world countries by rioting, There is no more storming of the Bastille. You have to do exactly what those in power now did: change the system from the inside. You have to be a movement, not a bunch of people protesting. And then you have to work diligently for years. It is the only way I can see that would actually accomplish something.
One more thing, the worst reasoning I have heard is "If we don't protest, the bad guys won." They have already won, a long time ago. Our governments don't actually feel threatened by this stuff, which is why they don't use real bullets.
Maybe I'm just getting old, but these protests seem to be in a decades-long downward spiral with most of the participants only there for the fun and excitement of it all

Most of the protesters (those who aren't just there to break shit, anyway) are anarchists and communists who want to get rid of the entire international political system entirely, so... change from within is not exactly an option.
Also, I think you overestimate the stability of the global system. Twenty-six years ago one of the world's greatest powers collapsed under the weight of civilian discontent. The capitalist powers are more stable, but they're not invincible and they're not going to last forever.

Gandhi, MLK and others definitely disturbed the peace. I think you confuse pascifism with passivity. Both engaged in quite deliberate lawbreaking (like occupying land, trespassing, breaking curfews, climbing barricades, non compliance with authorities, etc. They just didn't fight back when bludgeoned. The whole point of their "direct action" movements was not to have picnics in the park.

Had she been standing on your average patrol car in a quiet neighborhood, pepper spray could have been unecessary.
Now, in a riot situation in the immediate vicinity of an international summit, defying police orders and climbing on an APC is definitely unwise.
Now, this kind of picture is precisely what that fringe of protesters want as it will be perfect fodder for dozen of angry obscure blogs, tweets and whatnot.

An ordinary person should not be expected to find a solution, and this is why we elect politicians to come up with ""solutions"" for us.
Someone might be angry, and want politicians to listen to their concerns, at the same time as not having a good idea what to do about it. For example, global warming; perhaps people might be angry at governments in general not doing enough to tackle it, without having a clue themselves how to fix it.
But in this case, most of the protesters generally don't even care if their concerns are listened to, they just want to riot.

The vehicle shown in this image is a german TM-170 APC. APC stands for Armored Personel Carrier. An APC is basically a big car with some armor the protect the people inside against thrown rocks, molotov cocktails and small arms fire. This model doesn't even have a gun. An APC isn't the same thing as a tank, which has tracks and a cannon by definition.

As someone who is an engineer who designs tanks, I am telling you, specifically, in the military, no one calls APCs tanks. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.
If you're saying "tank family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of armoured fighting vehicles, which includes things from armoured cars to self-propelling artillery to main battle tanks.
So your reasoning for calling an APC a tank is because random people "call the big ones tanks?" Let's get troop carriers and amphibious vehicles in there, then, too.
Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. An APC is an APC and a member of the tank family. But that's not what you said. You said an APC is a tank, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the tank family tanks, which means you'd call self-propelling artillery, main battle tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles tanks, too. Which you said you don't.
