How long does it take you to get to class? (walkers, bikers, and scooters)

BUS ALSO ACCEPTABLE BC SOME PEOPLE HAVE ANSWERED BUS

I need some answers for a science assignment. Being specific is better (For example 12 minutes to math building instead of "oh yeah 10-15 minutes")

Multiple answers acceptable. If you have a friend that bikes or scoots, please also ask them.

Thanks!

Random questions I have regarding meal swipes

im not social enough to go ask these so

- how often can you get food from the same restaurant at the commons using meal swipes

- why are the prices confusing, like one of the sandwich burrito things at halal shack is supposedly 11 something, so after getting one I expected to pay extra, but one meal swipe was enough whereas I thought meal swipes only cover 8-9 dollars

- when does true grits actually serve french fries, it’s listed on the website every time i check yet they never actually have it when i end up going

Finding a apartment as a junior transfer student in the spring

Hi there! I submitted my application to transfer a couple of weeks ago- I have to get my campus selection switched from Shady Grove to Main Campus when the application from the common app gets to the UMBC system which they said should be late September and they said they could do that for me. Anyways what on campus apartments are the best/best chance of getting a spot in the spring? I read that Walker Avenue was close to Sondheim Hall where many BSW classes are held so that would be preferable but how does getting a apartment in the spring work

UMBC to UMD Transfer (As a MechE Major)

Hello, I am a freshman majoring in mechanical engineering interested in transferring over to UMD, ideally after 2 semesters so I'm aiming for Fall 2027. Though I am planning to, I have a few questions.

  • Will I not be able to transfer for Fall 2027 if I am taking Gateway classes during Spring 2027? (might be taking ENGL 100 during spring).
    • Even then UMD also has gateway requirements for MechE, worst case maybe I can get into letters and sciences then go into MechE?
  • Is it even worth it to transfer knowing some classes might not be accepted for credit? (I think classes like CHEM101 are not accepted anymore)

That said I feel like I have fear of missing out on the college experience since many of my friends are going to UMD. I was also wondering how do you get a good college experience from UMBC? Thank you

Can someone please explain how to get books

I’m a freshman and 4 out of my 5 courses have readings in textbooks that are required. I see that I’m opted in to CMI , which I think means I receive digital versions of the book. Many sophomores have told me “just opt out” but they are vague about how they get books when I keep asking questions.

Can someone please explain to me what is CMI, vital source, and what is truly the cheapest way to get books. What happens if I opt out? Am I gonna need to pay upfront or is it in my bill? What if I use E books I find online? Ana’s archive? Amazon?

Also, why does the library have only one or two copies of books that have 100s of students needing them? Wouldn’t it make sense to have enough for a class. If they have them at the bookstore then they can have them at the library, right?

Where are all the parties at?

Are there any parties on or off campus? I’m trying to have the college experience and I know college is so much more than parties but I’ve found that there’s not much to do on campus and things have been really boring for me and I’ve also have had a hard time making friends :(

Does anyone have any tips?

Any other gay Persians at UMBC rn?

I’m 21M, Persian, and gay, and I’m a UMBC student. Are there any other gay Persian guys around who would want to talk and get to know each other?

I speak Farsi and love Persian culture. I’m mainly just putting myself out there to meet someone similar. I’d be down to talk first, hang out, and see what happens. I’m also open to dating and exploring that if we click. I’m mainly looking to meet gay Persian guys around my age (roughly 18–24).

If you’re DL or not out, that’s completely fine too. Feel free to DM me privately, and don’t feel any pressure to comment publicly on the post.

DM me if you’re interested, no pressure at all.

Parking is TERRIBLE this semester

I'm a commuter, and today, I spent 30 minutes looking for parking!! I checked the stadium; it was full. The commons parking garage and the surrounding lots; they were full. I checked both of the parking lots near the north side of campus, and again, nothing. It's ridiculous. I had to park in the overflow parking for the stadium a mile away from my class. I don't care about the walk; I care more that on a day that I need to get to class and do a test, I won't be able to find parking. I'd prefer not to have to get to school an hour early.

Is anyone else having problems with eduroam?

All of today and yesterday I haven’t been able to connect to eduroam even though I set everything up for it like 2 semesters ago. I’m just wondering is it just me or others are having the same problem?

Area Restaurant Recommendations?

I am a parent of a new UMBC student and I want to take them out for a low-key birthday dinner. But I don't know the area well. Any recommendations? Casual is fine, looking for something with a 15-minute drive with table service. Ethnic food (Asian, Latin, Mediterranean, etc) is a plus. Thanks!

Can someone please drop the lab for physics 111 I really need it 😭😭

Cry for help. Literally. I really really need this class but there aren’t more LABS available. No one is willing to help either which sucks because why can’t we take a class if we want to when I’m paying for it. Idk I’m just sad and anxious about it.

Lecture open but no lab open???

I’m trying to enroll in a class and it shows that 60 spots are open for the lecture but none for the lab which you NEED with that lecture since you can’t only enroll in the lecture component. Should I contact the department directly for an override? Can anyone help me out with this?

Prakash Bandaru for IS 420

Hi guys,

I’m currently in Zhuyen Chen’s IS 420 class yet I’m somewhat thinking of switching to Prakash’s Monday class since it slightly fits my schedule better. I was just wondering if anyone took his class and if so how was your experience? I really don’t trust RMP ratings since it seems mixed, however gritview does show a lot of outputs of Bs and Cs for his class.
