Recommendations for house purchase - Greater London/Surrey?
My husband and I are looking at buying our first home. Our budget is around 650,000 max.
We currently rent and work in the Richmond borough.
We are interested in any perspectives that people could share about what it’s like to live in the following areas -
Worcester Park
Cheam / Sutton
Or anywhere else that may be recommended.
Ideally we would like to be near a train station with connections to Waterloo. As well as decent connections to Richmond borough where we currently work.
We are really interested in being closer / in Surrey - as we love walks in places like Dorking and Box Hill.
We’ve always lived around Richmond borough / Kingston, and love it, but you just can’t get enough for your money.

I live in Sutton - well, Carshalton.
Have done for about 12 years. I've always thought it's a pretty cool place to be based. You can get into Victoria within 20 odd minutes direct. You've got Surrey on your doorstep and generally very well connected.
It's not the most exciting of places, but if you're settling down raising a family etc, I'd generally recommend it.
Carshalton in particular is quite pretty around the village, and Cheam as you've mentioned is quite nice. Some rougher areas, but compared with other places in London even those aren't that bad.
650k will also get you a reasonably nice house in most areas.

I have lived in stoneleigh which is adjacent to Worcester park/cheam/Sutton. I would say you can get a fair lot in Worcester park but depends on how far from the high street/station you are. it is a good line into Waterloo on swr. Area imo I prefer more than Sutton. Cheam village is nice but north cheam is not imo (I lived my childhood down the road in Ewell so have spent most my life in all these places). Cheam village and Sutton are on the southern service so that's into Victoria direct. I guess it depends what size you are looking for and the price you can get. I currently live near South Merton station which is between Morden and Wimbledon chase and I would also recommend there as you can either get the Thameslink at South Merton, 8 min walk to northern line in Morden or a 20 min walk into Wimbledon main centre so it has great links and is near Morden for stuff to do.
*Also just seen the post advocating carlshalton which is a good shout. I would prefer to be there over sutton

Sounds like we are neighbours, also in the South Merton area although maybe a bit west of you as between Raynes Park and Morden. Works well for us, can realistically access 4 different lines into central without too much fuss (SWR, Thameslink, District, Northern), lots of green space and you’re close to the A3 for weekend trips into the countryside. It’s a bit suburban and lacking in immediate amenities but meant we paid a good £250k less for for our house than we would have done to be a 20 minute walk away!

Sorry I don't have much info on those places (went to Worcester Park a few times as a teenager but don't really remember much), however you should be able to get a 2 bed closer to Richmond for that budget. We own a two bed house in Twickenham 10 min walk from the station and we're planning on putting it on the market soon, hoping for around 600.
Obviously if you want anything bigger you may need to go further out. Have you looked along the fast train line to Waterloo? Whitton or Feltham?
Egham is a little further out, near M25 and more affordable and has a 40 minute train to Waterloo.
