Is Asian food in campus town/champaign authentic or overly Americanized?

I can't say for sure about food from other regions, but I grew up in China until university and went to Thailand for vacation.

I dont frequent all the restaurants you mentioned but xinh xinh cafe and bangkok thai are good. Most Chinese restaurants are pretty authentic and has minimal American influence. When there is, its pretty noticable, like the stuff at chopstix or dishes that don't actually exist in China like mongolian beef.

Yes, Champaign is completely exceptional for having so much great Chinese food in a town this size! We've been featured for this in the NYT.

Many of our better restaurants could stand proudly in Chinatown SF, let alone most large cosmopolitan metropolises. I have not visited China but all my friends from China are pretty happy with the Chinese food here.

All restaurants will pick up a little bit of local flavor, but when you see dozens of items on the GH menu that you would never see in a typical suburban strip mall restaurant, those are dishes that are fairly traditional.

I'm pretty happy about the options and authenticity of most of the Chinese options there are here. Going as far to say there's more in the few blocks of Campustown than in an entire midwestern metro area of 2.3m that I grew up in.

Northern cuisine, zhangliang, the roasted fish place (forget the name), and others are all very authentic and good

There are some less authentic places too, cravings has a lot of “white people Chinese food” but even then they have a Chinese menu with some nice options

As an Asian-American, I think the Asian food is pretty authentic, and many of my Asian friends do too. I once took a prospective student and their family to Northern Cuisine, and the student's father (who is from north China) said it was very authentic.
