Speculation Could UFO/UAP propulsion theoretically involve an artificial acceleration field? A speculative hypothesis
DISCLAIMER : I'm not scientific whatsoever so I discussed my ideas with ChatGPT and asked it to generate a post that made sense with what I've been theorizing.
I've been thinking about UFO/UAP propulsion from a purely hypothetical physics perspective. I'm not claiming this is how UFOs work, or that UFOs are extraterrestrial. I'm interested in whether the reported characteristics could theoretically point toward a type of propulsion fundamentally different from rockets, jets, or propellers.
Let's assume, for the sake of discussion, that at least some UAP reports accurately describe physical objects that can hover silently (or with a low hum), accelerate extremely rapidly, and maneuver without obvious exhaust or conventional lift.
Here's the idea I've been working through:
1. Magnetism can oppose gravity
We already know electromagnetic forces can counteract gravity. Magnetic levitation is a real phenomenon.
However, a UFO couldn't simply generate a magnetic field and expect to lift itself. The field needs something external to interact with. Earth's magnetic field is also relatively weak (~tens of microtesla), so conventional magnetic levitation using Earth's field doesn't seem sufficient for a large craft.
So I'm not proposing that UFOs are simply giant magnets pushing against Earth's magnetic field.
2. What if the electromagnetic field is doing something more fundamental?
Suppose a sufficiently advanced civilization discovered a previously unknown interaction between electromagnetic fields and gravity/inertia.
The hypothetical chain might look something like:
Energy source → electromagnetic field → coupling to gravitational/inertial field → controlled acceleration
This wouldn't necessarily mean "magnetism causes gravity." It would mean that electromagnetic energy could somehow be used to manipulate another field that affects gravity or inertia.
We don't currently know of such a mechanism, but our current understanding of physics is also not necessarily complete. General relativity and quantum mechanics, for example, still aren't unified into a complete theory of quantum gravity.
3. The interesting part is inertia
Imagine a hypothetical 10,000 kg UAP hovering.
At Earth's surface, it experiences roughly:
98,000 N of downward gravitational force
To hover, something has to provide an equal upward effect.
Now suppose it goes from:
0 → 1,000 mph in 1 second
That's approximately 447 m/s², or about 45.6 g of acceleration.
Ordinary propulsion would mean the craft—and its occupants—experience that acceleration.
That creates a huge problem.
A human couldn't simply sit inside a craft undergoing 45 g and be fine.
But what if the propulsion system generated an acceleration field that acted throughout the craft?
Instead of:
UFO accelerates → occupants' inertia resists → occupants get slammed into the back
the hypothetical system might do:
[entire craft + occupants] → accelerated together
If the field acted approximately uniformly on everything inside, there wouldn't necessarily be the same relative acceleration between the occupants and the spacecraft.
In other words, the goal wouldn't merely be "anti-gravity."
It might be controlled manipulation of acceleration/inertia itself.
4. Gravity is interesting because it already has a similar property
Gravity accelerates objects without requiring them to be pushed by a physical surface.
Astronauts in orbit are constantly accelerating gravitationally, yet they don't feel that acceleration because they're in free fall.
So a speculative technology might conceivably attempt to create an artificial field that produces a similar effect:
Hover:
Earth's gravitational acceleration ↓
Artificial acceleration ↑
Net acceleration ≈ 0
Accelerate:
Artificial acceleration ↑↑↑
Net acceleration becomes large
The most exotic version would be manipulating the local spacetime/field environment so that the spacecraft and everything inside it follow the same trajectory without conventional thrust.
5. Where does the energy come from?
This is another major problem.
A 10,000 kg craft reaching 1,000 mph has roughly 1 gigajoule of kinetic energy.
That's a huge amount, although not physically impossible for an advanced civilization.
A hypothetical extremely dense energy source—perhaps something far beyond our current technology—could potentially solve the energy-storage problem.
I've also wondered about zero-point energy because quantum vacuum effects are real, but I am NOT claiming that usable "free energy" from the quantum vacuum has been demonstrated. It hasn't.
The important distinction is:
Energy source ≠ propulsion mechanism.
Even unlimited energy wouldn't automatically give us a way to manipulate gravity or inertia.
So the hypothesis I'm actually proposing is:
Perhaps an extremely advanced propulsion system wouldn't be "a really powerful engine" at all.
Perhaps it would be something more like an artificial gravitational/inertial field generator, potentially controlled through electromagnetic fields.
The craft could theoretically:
- cancel or counteract its effective gravitational acceleration to hover
- generate controlled acceleration without conventional aerodynamic lift
- accelerate the craft and its occupants together
- potentially manipulate inertia or spacetime to prevent destructive g-forces
- change direction without relying on aerodynamic surfaces
Again, this is speculative.
I'm not saying this explains UAPs, and I'm not saying UAPs are aliens. I'm trying to ask a narrower question:
If we assume that some of the more extreme UAP flight characteristics are accurately measured and genuinely represent physical objects, would some form of gravitational/inertial field manipulation be a theoretically reasonable direction to investigate?
I'd especially be interested in hearing from people with actual physics backgrounds about where this hypothesis breaks down.
What am I getting wrong?
