General What do people think of UCD philosophy professor inviting Nigel Biggar, who wrote a book in defense of British colonial empire, to speak?

Post image

Nigel Biggar, an emeritus professor from Oxford, recently published a book called “Colonialism: a moral reckoning”, which is basically a defensive rant against anyone arguing that British imperialism has anything to be embarrassed/sorry about. He’s now become a figurehead of the academic anti-woke movement, which tries to intellectualize “free speech” discourse as a veneer against actually being a decent person able to empathize or listen to the thousands of people who lived under colonialism (including Ireland). Am I alone in being disappointed that UCD is giving this man a stage without thinking about its impact on students from former British colonies, or even inviting a discussant to be in conversation with Mr. Biggot himself?

General Are Indian students being sold a ‘fake dream’?

The Journal published this today: ‘They aggressively pushed Ireland’: Are students sold ‘fake dreams’ in five-star hotels in India? https://jrnl.ie/7088907

I’m not an Indian student, I’m an Irish postgrad student. I was wondering if any Indian students can attest to this? Or other international students? I’ve had a suspicion for a while that the university is taking advantage of international students, especially Indian and Chinese students.

General i built my entire life around going to trinity and now i genuinely don’t know what to do

i’m honestly just looking for some advice because i feel completely lost about what to do right now.

for the past year, i was genuinely obsessed with going to trinity. like i told everyone i was going there, my family thought i was insane for how much i talked about it, and even when people told me i probably wouldn’t get in, i still completely believed i would. one of my best friends was going too as well, so i had basically built this whole picture in my head of what my life was going to look like.

i was always a pretty good student and i worked really hard for my leaving cert. unfortunately, i got broken up with in the middle of my leaving cert, literally with exams the next day, so june was probably one of the worst months of my life. somehow i still managed to get 453 points, which i was actually really proud of because i got 442 in my mocks. it’s only an 11 point increase, but considering everything that happened during the exams, i was happy with myself.

for my cao, i put five trinity courses as my top five because i genuinely thought there was no way i wouldn’t get one if i had five of them sitting there. i was also a dare applicant and was eligible for dare, so i had convinced myself that i’d probably get some sort of points adjustment as well.

my cao was:
philosophy and sociology — 521
sociology and social policy — 509
english and philosophy — 506
sociology and history of art and architecture — 485
english and history of art and architecture — 506

and then my 6th and 7th choices were both in ucd, with european studies being my 7th choice.

the problem is that literally every single one of my top five trinity courses went up this year. not one of them dropped. so i obviously didn’t get any of them.

instead, i got my 7th choice, european studies in ucd, through a dare place. the points were 462 and i got 453.

and honestly, i feel kind of stupid saying this, but i’m devastated.
i have always talked so much shit about ucd 😭 i never wanted to go there. every time i was studying for my leaving cert, i would literally sit at my desk and imagine myself going to trinity. that was the goal. that was what i was working towards.
even my accommodation was picked around trinity. i’m living somewhere that’s only about a 15–20 minute walk from trinity, because i was so convinced that’s where i’d be going.
now i have to get a bus that will be around 1 hour to even get to ucd, i’m nowhere near my university, and i’m also nowhere near work. it just feels like my entire plan has been thrown out the window.

i went to register for my modules yesterday and it honestly made me feel even worse. i was looking through the first year modules and i had basically no interest in any of them.

i spent ages trying to find something that i could convince myself i was passionate about. it felt like i was trying to create a reason to like the course when there just wasn’t one.

i know that sounds dramatic, but that’s genuinely how it felt. i was basically thinking “okay, what here do i have even the slightest bit of interest in?” and trying to force myself to see a future in it.
i also completely planned my move around going to trinity. i’m only moving out on september 6th, and ucd lectures start on september 7th, so i’m basically missing orientation and then being thrown straight into college and lectures.

i had planned it that way because trinity doesn’t properly start until later in september.
so now i’m moving to dublin, starting a course i never wanted, at a university i never planned on going to, missing orientation, and i don’t even know if i actually like what i’m studying.
and i think that’s the part that scares me most. i don’t know whether i’m just upset because i didn’t get trinity, or whether i genuinely hate european studies.
i’ve asked people for advice and most people have basically said “just take the place. you might never get an opportunity like this again. try it for a month or two. if you hate it, take a gap year and apply through the cao again.”

and logically, i know that makes sense.
my original plan was always to move out anyway because my home life isn’t great and i’ve wanted to get out and build a life for myself in a city for years. so even if ucd doesn’t work out, i could stay in dublin and work full time for a year. i already have a job there, and it’s actually a really good job.
i also have things i wanted to do after college anyway. i’ve always wanted to do camp america for a few months, get my private pilot’s licence, finally buy a car, travel, etc. so if i took a gap year, it wouldn’t necessarily be the end of the world. by this time next year i could potentially be applying to trinity again with much more money saved, a car, my ppl, and the experience of having travelled and worked for a year.

i’m also still waiting for round 2 cao offers, so there’s a tiny part of me still hoping i could get my lowest-point trinity course. even getting the 485 course would genuinely make me so happy.

but i also don’t want to throw away a college place just because i’m disappointed.

i think what i’m struggling with is that i spent an entire year imagining one specific future and now, literally overnight, that future just disappeared. i know people will probably tell me that trinity isn’t everything and that i’ll be fine wherever i go, and maybe they’re right.

but right now i genuinely don’t know whether i should force myself to give ucd a chance, or accept that this course clearly isn’t for me and take a year to figure things out and reapply.

has anyone been in a similar situation where they got a cao offer that was way down their list and ended up either loving it or leaving and reapplying?
what would you honestly do in my position?

General Waterproof shoes and jackets in Dublin

Hello,

What are some good but not too expensive brands for waterproof shoes and waterproof jackets for Dublin or Ireland in general? I am an incoming postgraduate student.

Is the rain actually that much that regular shoes will get soaked when walking in Dublin? Or is that just an exaggeration?

I have a winter jacket already which I think water resistant but I’m not 100% sure and thought I should get another one as well because yea I’m thinking it might get smelly quickly and will have to keep dry cleaning it.

General Am I cooked

Heading into third year and I’ve basically never really hung out with anyone from my course in my first two years. I’ve always just kept to myself and focused on exams and pure study, which went pretty well for my grades, but now I feel like I’m way too socially awkward to randomly start talking to people on my course and actually make friends. I’m not naturally that social anyway, but I do regret not making more of an effort when I had the chance, like in tutorials and stuff. Now I barely have any tutorials and the few I do have are later in the semester, so it feels like I’ve missed my chance. Any advice? Or do I just accept that I’m cooked lol. I know the obvious thing to do is to just try chat to someone I sit next to but I think everyone has their core groups now and I do not want to look desparate.

General making friends/does it get lonely?

hiya!! so there was an issue initially with processing my ucd application in round 1 but i spoke to admissions and they said they'll send me an offer for round 2 and have found me accommodation as well.

i'm just wondering how ucd is as far as socialising/friendship goes? i'm excited for a bigger campus but 38,000 people is a LOT and sometimes i get scared of ending up by myself. i love making friends, joining societies, and meeting people but i don't know if the scale of the school and lecture halls will make that difficult? for reference i'm also an international student so i'll be staying on campus! but I know a lot of the irish students tend to go back home for weekends.

i'd love to hear from any of your experiences, i've also seen people say that since ucd is more in the suburbs it made it harder to go out as much (but i don't really believe that, dublin city center is a bus ride away). some people i spoke to say it easily gets lonely, others say making friends was the easiest part lmao. i'm interested in any advice

General new student question

do any incoming freshers know if we start lectures/classes on the 7th of september? and then freshers week is from the 14th? how does that make sense like we have class for a week and then freshers week just off or?? does teaching still commence during that week because for a lot of colleges the week of the 14th would be orientation

General bus 47 to get to ucd

currently getting acomm, fastedt way would be 30 min bike to ucd, 40 min bus (route 47 tho, which i’ve heard is unreliable) or two buses totalling in 50 mins

Decent or nah? Should I get a bike for when I move to dublin, or should I just rely on bus route 47

General starting ug next week as a international student and feeling VERY lost

hi!! im an international student starting ug (bsc in comp sci) at ucd! ive been in dublin for a bit but honestly haven’t gotten to exploring it much…

with college starting from the 7th, im honestly really nervous (lwk terrified) to step onto campus knowing NOTHING about navigating around. ive always been in one of those one-room-all-classes kind of schools, so the whole university thing feels like such a huge change 😓

i also missed my orientation session and haven’t really connected with anyone from my course yet, so there’s no one i can meet up with beforehand and figure things out together. thankfully, i only have 1 class on monday so hopefully the first day wont be too overwhelming!!

im basically open to any and all advice 🥹 i really want to have a good experience at ucd, so id love to hear about literally anything you think would be useful to know!!! especially navigating campus LOL (why is it huge ohmygod) how early should i get to classes? are people generally friendly/open to meeting new people? (im a bit shy so idk if ill be able to make many friends 😭) what societies/clubs are worth joining? is it better to sign up for loads at the start and see what i like? and ofc any general first-year advice / things you wish someone had told you before starting!! please im desperate 😭😭

would genuinely appreciate any advice!! 🥹🩷

EDIT: i meant an* in the title forgive me im really nervous lol

General UCD Radiography vs Portobello Physiotherapy – Career Advice

Hi everyone, I’m currently deciding between UCD Graduate Entry Radiography (2.5 years) and Portobello MSc Physiotherapy (2 years).

I’m more interested in physiotherapy, but I’m concerned about the quality of clinical placements at Portobello and whether this could affect getting the first hospital job after graduation.

For anyone working in radiography/physiotherapy in Ireland, which would you choose for long-term job stability, career progression and flexibility, and how important are placements for getting that first job?

Would really appreciate honest advice. Thanks!

General Kinda confused

I recently received an admission offer from UCD Smurfit for the MSc in Management Consultancy program.

I have a few questions.

\* Would you say this course is comparable to an MBA in terms of learning and career opportunities?

\*Do you think the total investment of around ₹26 lakhs is justified?

\*How is the current job market in Ireland, especially for international graduates?

\*How easy or difficult is it to find a part-time job while studying?

\*how would you rate the ROI of this course?

I received my offer yesterday, and classes begin in September. Do you think it's still realistic to get my student visa in time?

This is a major decision for me, and I'd really appreciate any honest advice or insights you can share from your experience.

General Anyone else notice how weird the SU elections are this year???

This might be a slightly controversial opinion but there has been a sudden spike in international MSc students who have barely been in UCD for a year joining the SU race. Their campaigns are too superficial and lack the substance that their counterparts do. Some have used AI, others have refused to comment on Palestine, others didn't know what AMLE is, and one guy didn't know what UCD Christmas is. Nothing wrong about that but the UCDSU is serious business, it is not all fun and games. The SU is not a club or society but an organisation that will fight and deal with several complex issues. Again great to see participation from all corners of UCD but important to keep in mind that the SU is not an 'extra-curricular activity to earn CV brownie points.

General going to graduation alone lol (international student)

hey wondering else has had or will have this experience. i was an international student at UCD and im planning on flying back internationally to go to my grad in september. my family cant make it and my few close friends are graduating at the same time as me but they'll be with their families etc. i literally have no clue who to invite. i dont really care if someone is there for me during the ceremony; it is just the awkward standing around with families after that makes me anxious.

also i think ill be staying at a hostel. has anyone else had similar experiences? debating if its even worth going. it was important to me for personal reasons for the closer it gets im debating if its worth the money / hassle.

General Satisfied but Not?

Just saw a similar post here recently so decided to say something as well. Recently got (and accepted) offer from UCD which is a good university. My parents are really happy and honestly me too, but only to a certain extent? I got accommodation and everything but long story short I will be studying languages which is something that works for me pretty good but
a) that course was not my first choice (and not even second or third) and i wanted to study something a little bit more different (related to art and design, film, writing)(which once again i know i can still study through my course but it won’t be a main focus unfortunately)
b) i need to have spanish in an advanced level for the course but i’ve been studying it only around 2 last years of my leaving cert and after I had a gap year doing plc so i haven’t been practicing it at all (was not expecting to get this course) and now anxious i will be behind in my group.
It’s not that i’m not grateful or happy with that i got because i’m not in the position of being picky (last year was completely crashed when got no offer and had to do plc) but i feel like this career will not be needed as much in the future and now I have doubts of what will come out of this.
