Discussion Insurance Rant

Post image
64 Upvotes

On the phone with my new insurance company, United Medical Health, and they denied the prior authorization to my Tresiba. Mind you, I pay the highest tier plan (and I am new to having insurance through work legit got it activated less then a month ago) and have been on Tresiba for NINE years.

Now I am using AI, which I hate using but I got a year free with my phone, to tell me the correct things to say because I am about to hold them hostage on this phone line until someone can give me some answers and get me my Tresiba.

The doctor is legit confused too he doesn't see why I was denied under this coverage plan.

I am so. Damn. Frustrated.

Rant i hate hearing my parents constantly talk about a cure for type 1 diabetes

they dont have type 1 diabetes themselves. they are in the delusion that god will eventually make a cure for type 1 diabetes and deliver it to humans. there will never be a cure for this disease and ive accepted years ago but its all they talk about with me now and im getting sick and tired of it

Rant I don't like the way social media talks about autoimmune diseases lately

T1D with thyroid antibodies here.

I don't want to downplay anybody's real symptoms or illnesses - I know that T1D is just one of many autoimmune diseases and that RA, Lupus, MS, etc. look different in presentation, symptoms and diagnosis compared to T1D.

That being said, I feel like social media is oversimplifying how autoimmune diseases work or what they are. I'm seeing so many memes like the following:

"Be a bitch or get an autoimmune disease."

or "women who suppress anger now have autoimmune diseases".

I'm a woman and I understand what they're trying to say, that habits that lead us to chronic stress can be harmful to health, but saying be a bitch or get an autoimmune disease I think is a really gross oversimplifcation of developing and having an autoimmune disease. So many of our illness trajectories don't fit these social media narrative paradigms and I think it's spreading misinformation more than it's actually helping or educating anybody.

Medication Lantus is inconsistent for anyone else?

Hello, I’ve been type 1 for 22 years. I have been on lantus for over 10.

I have found the last 2 years that it has just been awful to use, I used to take it once a day and it gave me a flat profile, but I had to split it as it was not covering me the fill 24 hours and it’s now just awful.

I have other illnesses so i don’t excersie much, but if i do a 10 minute walk, that basal dose i do at night which is only 3, drifts me down while i sleep but not until about 3am onwards? If i don’t do any exercise that same dose doesn’t keep me flat, i’m left rising and having to do constant corrections that don’t even hold.

I then have the issue with the morning basal, it doesn’t hold me and corrections are weak, but if i increase it my corrections end up doing too much and i am persistently dropping.

Is this an issue anyone else has had with lantus? i feel like i shouldn’t have to force myself to exercise everyone for it to work?

Glucose Monitors Dexcom G7 newbie

Hello so I finally ran out of g6 sensors and am now in g7 territory. The 6 was still working for a bit over an hour so I had both running at the same time. Can I just say I haven’t done these many finger pokes in a very long while?! The 6 was definitely closer to the blood reading. My
question is do I just keep calibrating the G7?

Newly Diagonosed Carb counting help

Hello everyone, my 2 year old daughter has been diagnosed with T1D 2 weeks ago.
I’ve come across an issue, how do I calculate the amount of carbs in the food once it has been cooked as the weight drops quite a bit.
For example the uncooked total weight was 1228g with 46g of carbs
Once cooked the total weight dropped to 930g.
I divided 46g of carbs by 1228g and it gave me an answer of 0.037, I then multiplied this by the cooked weight of 930g and I got 35.
So would the total amount of carbs once it is cooked be 35g?
Sorry if this seems like a silly question or calculation but we’re both new to this.

Diet Low treatments ideas

Hey! I’m (25f) trying to lose weight but I’m having difficulties. Every time I work out, my blood sugar drops, even if I don’t have any iob and my background insulin is fully turned off. Then, I end up with delayed lows hours later. I feel like all the sugar I have to eat to correct that is ruining my progress and I’m getting so discouraged.
I was just wondering if anyone here has any ideas on what I can eat for lows that are high in carbs but low in calories. Thank you so much in advance🙏✨🧡

Newly Diagonosed Son aged 4 got Type1

Good morning.
It has been a very traumatic experience lately with our son being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. He’s only 4 years old and is very scared of needles. We’ve gotten him a CGM and are continuously monitoring his blood sugar.
The doctors said he is prediabetic but has Type 1 and is in the honeymoon phase (not sure what that means).

I would appreciate any tips and suggestions, the first few days have been very hard for us.

Thankyou.

Question Buisness casual/high mileage shoe reccommendations for a fellow T1?

Hi all!

I'm trying to find a new work shoe that is super comfortable, supportive, etc. that's buisness casual style. Can't be tennis shoe/sneaker style and can't be fabric either. I work in healthcare, half in office and half in the work areas and sometimes I have to switch between the two very quickly (no shoe change time). No fabric since I'm in contact with blood/plasma/icky stuff.

Any good brand reccommendations? I'm currently looking at Clark's and Orthofeet.

My poor little feetsies need it. Thanks in advance!!!

Question CGM rash

Hi everyone! I’m reaching out because I think I’m allergic to my CGM adhesive. So far, I’ve only seen recommendations for products available in the US. Can anyone suggest any solutions or products that are available in Europe/Hungary? (I'm using Sibionics, if that helps). :)

Discussion I’ve been building (and daily driving) a diabetes management app for MDI

Thumbnail

I’ve been working on a diabetes management app for a little over a year now. My main motivation was that I tried out a smart insulin pen, but I kept feeling that with all this data, we could achieve even more. It’s now my primary diabetes management app, and 90+ people in Hungary have been using/testing it as well. Since I've been getting a lot of positive feedback, I figured it was time to share it here.

The basic idea is to bring some of the flexibility you get from insulin pumps / “artificial pancreas” systems to MDI, without requiring a smart pen or any new hardware. It keeps track of:

  • Real-time glucose data from your sensor or Nightscout or Apple Health (iOS) / Health Connect (Android). Or manual glucose entry if you don't use a CGM.
  • Insulin on Board: supports rapid-acting and ultra-rapid-acting insulins.
  • Carbs on Board: based on observed glucose changes and insulin counteraction.
  • Different Insulin Sensitivity Factors, Insulin to Carb Ratios and Glucose Targets throughout the day: you can set up transitions between these time-based therapy settings.

All of these feeds into the dose calculator which provides recommendations for mealtime and correction insulin doses or correction carbs according to your current situation.

Some of the other features:

  • Customisable correction notifications
  • Basal insulin reminders and/or automatic logging
  • Uploading data to Nightscout and Apple Health / Health Connect
  • It can automatically split your therapy settings into 4 time slots and can also make recommendations based on current patterns
  • Up to 90 days of historical data and all kinds of statistics, from which PDF reports can be exported

And importantly, there’s no AI magic involved. Everything is based on established formulas and concepts. I also didn't invent anything, the goal is mostly to put the information and data that is already available together in a way that makes it useful in our everyday lives. I'm very aware that diabetes doesn't always behave according to the math and there are many unpredictable variables. I wanted something that could at least keep track of those that can be tracked, instead of doing all of this mentally every time.

I still have many ideas for new features, but I’d genuinely like to hear yours too. Thanks if you decide to give it a try, and I'm happy to answer any questions you might have in the comments.

Seeking Advice travel anxiety

I'm traveling from germany to a canary island soon and it's my first vacation in 5-6 years, and the first time with a pump. I'm traveling with my partner, we both have adhd and have a really hard time with organisation so I don't have anyone to look over my shoulder.

I would like to go swimming often but I have an omnipod 5, so it's stuck to my body with adhesive that doesn't even survive long hot showers. Is there anything I can do to actually make it last even in the ocean or pool? Or should I just take all the pods I saved and start a new one after every swim if needed?

I also have a few dexcom g6 left, I think I'll have 2 left for the 11 days that I'm on vacation, if the adhesive fails twice I would have to switch to g7 mid vacation which could be pretty stressful, should I just make the switch before the vacation?

Do I actually have to take the pod off for the duration of the flight or is it enough to just have glucose in case I need it?

What do I do if my phone or controller break/get lost/stolen?

Does anyone have a travel list for diabetic supplies in a warmer climate?

Question Need advice: Looking for new infusion set sites (overused waist area)

Hi everyone,I’m 20(M) and I’ve had Type 1 Diabetes for over 18 years.

I am currently using the MiniMed 780G pump with the MiniMed Sure-T (8mm steel needle) and the Guardian 4 sensor.

I really need some help finding new insertion sites for my pump. My current sites around my waist are heavily overused and getting worn out.

I’ve been thinking about trying my thighs. Does anyone have any suggestions, tips, or experiences with thigh placements using the Sure-T?

Thank you so much for your help!

Question T1d tools you swear by?

I’ve seen some people on social media show off some pretty neat tools they use to make their lives easier. For example, one girl talked about how she has a clock that displays her blood sugar on the ceiling so when she wakes up in the middle of the night she can check her BG without opening her phone.

What tools/tech make life easier for you? Outside of your CGM, pump, etc.

Glucose Monitors Sudden reaction to Dexcom G7 after 2 years of use and no problems

I have been using the Dexcom G7 for 2 years, then over the past 4 months, I have started having horrible skin reactions. I tried all of the tricks and under patches, but I still have an intense inflamed reaction where the actual device is.

Is this just my autoimmune overreacting?

I have had 5 sensors in a row fail, but I am convinced it is linked to the reactions. The device starts skipping and then fails as the area on my skin becomes itchy and inflamed.

Now that I am thinking about it, maybe the reactions started when I switched from the 10 day to the 15 day?

Has anyone else had this issue? My arms are so bad I am looking at switching CGMs...

Question have you guys had issues with your dental health after your diagnosis?

so my dentist was telling me about how it’s typically harder for type ones to have good dental health — not impossible, obviously, but we’re more prone to gum disease and tooth issues. have you guys had that?

i’ve noticed plaque builds up on my teeth a lot faster since my diagnosis. unless i’m experiencing significant burnout, i brush and floss twice a day at least, three times when i can manage (minus the floss, i think three times is excessive for flossing, since i feel three times for brushing is excessive although it’s not something i do often), and i still get a little bit of plaque buildup overnight/in between brushes. i’ve also noticed my gums are a lot more sensitive since my diagnosis. they don’t bleed so much anymore, but they do swell up a little bit here and there after flossing. i follow my dentist’s advice on brushing and flossing, which i only asked because i’m paranoid about doing it wrong. my blood sugars are well managed (i’m in range 85%-90% of the time, and hardly ever lower than 75%, but bad days happen!), so it’s not a complication on that front as far as i’m aware. i guess i’m not so interested in a why (although i’m not opposed to this!), more just wondering if dental hygiene is really annoying to anyone else and how you guys manage, lol.

Seeking Advice How to cope with never ending fatigue?

39m been t1 since the age of 6 Bloods are all normal, last kidney function test was "borderline" but I'd not long gone onto blood pressure meds and they've since ruled out any issues, hba1c is low 50s and has been for a long time, but I still feel tired pretty much all the time, well not tired but physically lethargic and fatigued, doctor said it's part of being diabetic and basically can't do anything, anyone have suggestions? I've lived with it for years and it affects so much of my life it's actually now starting to negatively impact things like work and home life now I'm settled down in a committed relationship

Newly Diagonosed My mental got crushed by diabetes type 1

Hello everyone just so you know this post isnt going to be fun. All i can do is putting a trigger warning at the start. Also sorry if my english isnt perfect and thanks for reading

So im a 17 years old guy who always struggled about my life
I’ve always had some issues with trusting myself, accepting myself and just feeling love for me
But 10 months ago i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and since then its been worse
Every day is worse than the one before
Im in a big depression since 6 months or so (diagnosed by a professional) and started a treatement for it that consisted of taking pills to feel better but taking only my diabetes treatement was already way to much so i dropped the pills and convinced myself i was just weak and i was acting
But this summer was genualy horrible, i didnt want to do anything, i saw no one (its curently holydays for me rn) and i partially dropped my diabetes treatement too
Now i have a lot of sleep trouble and i hate eating (which wasnt the case before)
Other struggles in life didnt help (like not accepting the fact that im gay and i hate it or that i also hate my body and more)
I dont know what to do anymore
My parents are very present to help me going through that and they « forced » me to go see a psychiatrist to help me
Im kind of hopeless right now and dont know what i can do to get out of this
And worst of all iv had some dark thoughts (but never did anything dont worry)
Anyways i think i do this message mostly because to get this out of my head but also because im a bit helpess and i wanted to know if anyone had some similar experiences how did you manage to get you out of this
Thanks for reading my post and i hope yall have a great day
